Survival of the Thickest Season 2 Episode 1 recap: Luca breaks up with Mavis 

Survival of the Thickest recently dropped its second season on Netflix. Created by Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and Michelle Buteau, Survival of the Thickest follows the character of Mavis Beaumont, a plus-sized Brooklyn-based fashion stylist. The premiere episode once again brought back the familiar premise of Mavis navigating her professional and personal life as she tries to keep things on an even keel.

The episode also saw Mavis flying to Rome to surprise Luca. After subsequently realizing that their relationship won't work and perhaps that the two of them are not destined to be together, Luca breaks up with Mavis, who ultimately returns back home.

What happened between Luca and Mavis on Survival of the Thickest season 2 episode 1?

The premiere episode of Survival of the Thickest took up from where the debut season had left off. Right at the beginning of the episode, Mavis makes a surprise trip to Rome so that she can meet up with Luca. Initially Luca is pleased to see her, and sparks soon fly between the two of them as they share intimacies. Eventually Mavis apologizes to Luca for having caused him hurt, with the hope that they can work out their differences.

Luca is nonchalant but puts up a normal face and soon leaves for work. Mavis tries to busy herself and at first calls her friend Khalil and then goes around visiting the city and shopping on her own. On the other hand, Luca reaches his workplace and confides in one of his colleagues about the fact that Mavis did betray him. Later on, he speaks with his sister, who is vehemently intolerant of Mavis.

Luca eventually takes Mavis out the next day and introduces her to his friends. During a night out at a karaoke bar, the two of them sing It Wasn't Me by Shaggy. Luca ultimately tells Mavis the truth and remarks that there's no trust between them any longer. Mavis boards her return flight and comes back home the next day on Survival of the Thickest.

Survival of the Thickest creators speak about the second season

Sanchez-Witzel and Buteau recently spoke in an interview with Tudum wherein they remarked the following about the second season of Survival of the Thickest on Netflix:

"How are we growing not only Mavis, but the whole world. The theme that we kept coming back to was leveling up. Getting these characters to reach new heights romantically, take chances with their careers."

Sanchez-Witzel was then asked about their writing process, to which she replied,

"Well, we’re bi-coastal: Our writers’ room was in L.A., Michelle’s in New York. So it was a lot of Zoom! We have a whiteboard up in the room, and we just start thinking about questions like, “What do we want? What do we want to happen?” We talked about Season 1 being a moment. And when we got into Season 2 and we realized we were doing a movement. So we went from moment to movement."

The creators also mention that the supporting cast members each have their own storylines, complete with heartbreaks, epiphanies, and changes in their careers in this season.
