The Surface Season 2 finale ends the series without announcing a concrete piece of information regarding Sophie's past, or her potential connection with the affluent Huntley family. Though the final episodes reveal deeper interconnections between Sophie's late mother, Emma, and the Huntleys, the series never makes Sophie appear as the daughter of Henry Huntley.

The finale, however, leaves all things hanging in the air, with Sophie's own history being more connected with the family than initially thought. By the end of Season 2, Sophie's quest for clues regarding her mother's death and the possible entanglement of the Huntleys is still at the forefront.

Even when Sophie tries in an attempt to target Henry Huntley in the middle, she fails because he enlists a lawyer. The reluctance by the characters to give Sophie easy answers regarding where she is from is in sync with the core thematic elements of the series: memory, identity, and cover-up.

Sophie's constant quest to find about her past in Surface Season 2

All throughout Season 2, Sophie discovers more about her mother's history and what would constitute the Huntley family. The show establishes that Emma had a deep history with the Huntleys, at least directly with Henry Huntley, but the nature of the relationship isn't answered. The show also doesn't leave any clue about Sophie's father, but the answers posed lead on as though there is more depth to the family connection.

The show also focuses on Sophie's changing outlook. While at first concerned with restoring her memory and identity, her quest eventually becomes more focused on finding out the truth about the events surrounding Emma and the agencies that could have been involved in a cover-up.

James' return and changing motives in Surface Season 2

James returns to the show in Season 2 with an agenda regarding Sophie's past behavior. Having helped her cover up a cryptocurrency heist, James returns to London in need of assistance to pay off a hefty loan he had taken out to clean up the mess.

Although he insists his intentions are pure, the finale suggests otherwise, such as his memorizing Sophie's crypto wallet password — revealing a degree of manipulation. His return complicates Sophie's life further since she has to determine if she can trust him once more or if he poses a new danger to her independence and safety.

The Huntley family's role remains unclear in Surface Season 2

The Huntleys still have a large shadow looming over Surface Season 2. When Sophie tries to intrude into Henry Huntley in the flesh, his unwillingness to meet her, and his hiring of a lawyer demonstrate his requirement to keep his distance from engagement. This serves to corroborate the family's requirement of controlling information and avoiding being in the limelight.

Besides, Phoebe's sudden death — a key source of the journalist investigating the Huntleys — is adjudged as a suicide, but the timing and the events do appear fishy. Though the show never outrightly blames the family for her death, the series of events does lean towards attempts to cover up incriminating details regarding her death.

The finale of Surface Season 2 emphasizes uncertainty over closure

The last few episodes of Surface Season 2 tie up some loose ends but leave others dangling. Sophie remains without any fixed answers regarding her parentage or the full scope of her mother's history with the Huntleys. Rather than furnishing fixed answers, the series continues on its twin themes: the unreliability of memory, the disjointedness of individual identity, and the impossibility of revealing long-hidden truths.

As the summer draws to a close, Sophie is still resolute in seeking the truth, despite the fact that much of her past — and most especially her connection to the Huntleys — is shrouded in mystery.
