The new Apple TV series Surface follows Sophie, played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, whose memory becomes fragmented after a traumatic incident. The series opens with Sophie dreaming about the incident when she fell from the ship deck. We later get to know about the intensity of her past trauma when, in a scene, she suffers a severe breakdown while driving over a bridge.

Sophie's true identity is Tess Caldwell. Sophie chooses to fake her death and discover who she actually is and experiences some striking realizations. Season 1 of the show is all about Sophie finding out her ugly past and details about her husband James and lover Baden. In Season 2, as its trailer suggests, Sophie "needs to go where it all began" to trigger some suppressed memories; she stages her disappearance and goes to London. Sophie meets Eliza, a close friend of Tess, and rekindles the relationship. This could result in adding some interesting layers to the psychological-thriller drama.

Surface season 2 Episode 3, a quick recap

Season 1 of Surface ended with Sophie staging her disappearance and going to London. Season 2 begins with Sophie finding out that James has followed her to London. Sophie is already spiraling a lot about James's dangerous involvement in the attack after she finds Baden murdered in his apartment following a public fight between Baden and James.

In episode 3, titled Kintsugi, Sophie is determined to know more about her mother, Emma Antoine—is she actually dead? She finds out that the doctor who signed her mother's death certificate is from nowhere but William Huntley. We get to know about Eliza, who is Tess's childhood friend, but something happened that hurt their friendship, and they never spoke again.

A flashback reveals how James has tracked Sophie's Bitcoin payments to London and is pretending to be a rich guy with expensive cars. He crashes Sophie's party to meet his contact, who is keeping an eye on Sophie's actions and payments. When he encounters Sophie, the latter tells him to back off, but instead, James tells her to meet him outside as he really needs to talk to her.

Meanwhile, Callum Walsh is an investigative journalist who is working on some criminal activities taking place in William Huntley's and relied on a source named Phoebe Davis. Phoebe is a sex worker and possesses some crucial information about the case. Phoebe disappeared and was later found dead, allegedly by suicide. Callum's editor repeatedly tells him not to pursue the case, but he doesn't budge as he thinks that Phoebe has been intentionally silenced.

At the end of the episode, James confesses to Tess her feelings about the way she is living her life as a different person. He points out that Tess had a selfish habit of using people for her benefit. James expresses that he was grieving for her death, and knowing that she is alive and doesn't even care is making him upset.

The new episode 4 of Surface is set to stream on March 13, 2025.
