After its premiere in 2022, Surface is back on Apple TV+ with its second season after a wait of almost 3 years. Given that the show has established itself as a slow-burn thriller, the second season has also ensured that the viewers hold on to their patience before major developments occur.
The second episode of season 2 picks up almost immediately after the events of the season premiere. The viewers see Eliza having a dream about Tess. Upon waking up, she decides to look for her, it becomes evident that Eliza probably still has feelings for her.
New development regarding Tess’ mother’s death certificate also happens in Surface Season 2 Episode 2. Let us now delve into the episode in detail.

Surface Season 2 Episode 2 shows Tess being suspicious of her mother’s death certificate
In the second episode of Surface Season 2, Tess is shown to be getting suspicious of her mother’s death certificate that mentioned that she died because of ‘unclassified’ reasons.
While Callum agrees that it is somewhat strange, he also tells Tess that her trying to draw a connection between the death certificate and William Huntley is only based on assumptions and not facts.
However, Callum also works on getting more details on the death certificate and the doctor who issued it. After some serious digging, it turns out that the doctor who had written Tess’ mother’s death certificate was Matthew Lewis, who is now dead.
What appears more shocking is that Lewis indeed had a connection with Huntely, as suspected by Tess. He was the family doctor of William, and so it becomes quite evident that it was William Huntly who made the doctor rule out any suspicious cause of death and also prevented Tess’ mother from having an autopsy.
Tess goes to Quinn and Grace’s engagement party as suggested by Callum in Surface Season 2 Episode 2
As Callum and Tess continue working together, he tells her that if she needs more information on the Huntleys, then she should find a way to get to the engagement party of Quinn and Grace. Moreover, Callum, who is shown to be being followed throughout the episode, also points out that because of the kind of dynamic that Tess shares with Eliza, it would not be that difficult for her to get access to the part.
Taking Callum’s advice, Tess talks to Eliza and her words work as the latter invites her to the party. However, upon arriving there, Tess finds to her disappointment that William Huntely is absent.
While she went there with a different intention, the party turns out to be something else for her as Eliza confronts Tess and tells her she seems to be keeping a lot more secrets and she cannot recognize her anymore.
Tess retorts back to her saying that she does not know all the things that have been going on and the tension between the two becomes evident yet again.
