Surface Season 2 cast and character guide: Who plays whom in Apple TV's thriller show

Apple TV's thriller show Surface, which debuted in July 2022, is returning for Season 2, which will premiere on February 21, 2025.

It follows the story of a woman named Sophie, who has lost all her memories following a suicide attempt. But as she begins to piece her life back together, she must confront her past and find out what drove her to take such a drastic step.

Talking about her identity in the final moments and what viewers can expect in Season 2, actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw said in an interview with Variety:

“We met Sophie in such a fragile, vulnerable state in many ways, and looking to others to define her. By the time we get to the end, and she has evolved into this discovery of Tess and what she’s capable of, it really felt like her agency can just grow from there.

1) Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Sophie

Raw, who played the lead role of Sophie in Surface, will return in Season 2. She plays the character of a woman who tried to take her own life by suicide but instead faced memory loss. Throughout Season 1, she tried to piece her life back, and in Season 2, as per Variety:

“[she will continue] rediscovering the unfinished relationships that have haunted her memories – as she finds out where she really came from, and what made her the flawed person she was.”

Raw is best known for her work in Doctor Who, Misbehaviour, The Girl Before, and Loki.

2) Oliver Jackson-Cohen as James Ellis

Cohen played the role of James, Sophie's husband, in Surface Season 2. He will also reprise his role in the sophomore chapter, and Sophie's relationship with him will continue to be distraught, as she thinks James is hiding truths about her past life.

Cohen is best known for his work in Dracula, The Invisible Man, and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

In addition to the leading actors, supporting actors Ari Graynor as Caroline, Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Hannah, François Arnaud as Harrison, Christin Park as Victoria, Millie Brady as Eliza, and Stephan James as Baden will also reprise their roles.

Which new actors are joining Surface Season 2?

Three confirmed cast members will be joining Surface Season 2. They are as follows:

1) Phil Dunster as Quinn

Best known for his performance in Apple TV's sports comedy Ted Lasso, Dunster has joined the Surface Season 2 cast. He is also known for his work in The Trouble with Maggie Cole and The Devil's Hour.

Dunster will play the role of Quinn, Eliza's elder brother. As per Variety, his character will be:

“the privileged scion of a troubled, old-money family who’s attempting to blaze a new trail for the younger generation – all the while struggling against his own darker tendencies.”

2) Freida Pinto as Grace

Best known for her breakout debut role in Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto is best known for her roles in Love, Sonia, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, and Mr. Malcolm's List.

She will play the role of Grace, Quinn's fiancée, and as per Variety, her character will be:

“conflicted about what she’s really signing up for, and forms a special bond with Sophie.”

In addition, actress Callie Cooke will also join Surface Season 2 as Margot. She is best known for her roles in Doctor Who, Wedding Season, and Henpocalypse!
