The rumors surrounding the return of Supernatural with season 16 have ignited predictions about a possible future storyline. Supernatural, created by Eric Kripke, ran for 15 seasons on The CW and aired its last episode on November 19, 2020. The finale received mixed feedback, with many fans saying that the lead characters should have had a better ending. There have been no updates about a possible revival of the series yet.
Supernatural follows the story of two brothers, Sam (played by Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (played by Jensen Ackles), who fight evil supernatural beings on Earth. In the series finale, viewers were introduced to Dean, Sam Winchester’s son, who is named after his brother. There have been discussions about the possibility of a new season with Dean Jr. leading the hunt.
What happened in Supernatural Season 15 finale?
In the series finale of Supernatural titled ‘Carry On’, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester are living their lives as monster hunters. A group of vampires attacks a family and kidnaps their kids. The brothers trace the presence of the vampires back to 1986 when their father hunted a similar kind.
During the showdown with the vampires, Dean gets badly injured and ends up dying with Sam next to him. While Dean goes to heaven, Sam lives a regular life on Earth. He gets married and has a boy, whom he names ‘Dean’ after his brother. The time-lapse shows that he has some health issues, and as he is about to die, Dean Jr visits him. In the afterlife, Dean and Sam reunite.
The future of Supernatural
Since Sam and Dean Winchester are no longer in the world of Supernatural, Sam’s son could take the reins and continue the legacy of his father and uncle as a hunter. New potential villains could make the whole premise interesting. After season 15 aired, there were suggestions online about a possible spinoff show that would look at Dean Jr. traveling back in time to change the events of the day. While the idea may expose some loopholes, the three of them as a hunting team is intriguing.
In an interview with CBR in 2024, Jared Padalecki showed interest in returning to the world of Supernatural. He said,
“In hindsight, Jensen and I have always said 'always,' if we ever have the option. I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said '2025. In 2020, we're ending this. Let's get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to.”
He also shared,
“My only contingency about it is, with Jensen and I being so protective of the show and the characters, the story has to be absolutely right. I don't just put on flannel and big coat, get in an Impala and say 'Dean!' That won't work for Jared. It needs to have a purpose, as Sam and Dean always did.”
Supernatural is available on The CW to stream.
