"Stop wasting cash": Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary shares the advice he would give to his younger self

Shark Tank mentor Kevin O'Leary shared a video via his Instagram on February 18, 2025. He wrote in the caption, "Save, invest, and stop buying all that crap you don't need!"

The video clip featured Kevin O'Leary answering the host's question as to what advice he would give his younger self. In response to the question, Kevin O'Leary stated:

"Don't buy all that s*it you didn't need. I wish I'd not bought all that crap I bought, and I wish I put it into the stock market 30 years ago because it would be worth much more than the jeans I threw away. You don't need 15 pairs of jeans or 40 sneakers. Put the rest in the market and stop wasting cash. That's what I'd say to myself."

In the recently shared clip, Kevin O'Leary shared his advice for his younger self. He recalled having multiple pairs of jeans and sneakers. While sharing that, the Shark Tank mentor also mentioned that it would have been "worth much more" if he had used that money for investment.

The interviewer's question was:

"If you go back to when you first started your business, what's one thing you would tell your younger self?"

Kevin recalled many things he didn't need when reflecting on his younger self. His essential advice to himself was to not "waste" money.

In another video shared via his YouTube channel on December 1, 2020, O'Leary shared 5 things everyone should do in their 20s to be successful for the "rest of their life."

Among them, as the Shark Tank mentor stated, everyone needs to have a "plan" mapped out:

"You got to start thinking about how much money am I going to put aside each week that I'm going to invest for the long run. So when I'm 65 I have my nest egg. You don't know what life's going to bring you. It's serendipitous. Anything can happen."

He talked about possibly getting married, having kids, and more. But he advised that starting saving in the 20s is a must. The Shark Tank investor stated that those with a job must keep a particular amount aside.

For those who don't have a job, he stated from whatever money they have, they need to "put some aside." The amount he suggested was $100. Further in the video, he also talked about finding a mentor, learning how to fail, and more.
