Star Trek: Lower Decks is the ninth addition to the Star Trek series collection. Released in 2020, it is the only animated series released by the franchise since Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks was created by Mike McMahan, who is also known for serving as a writer for Rick and Morty. The plot of the series is about starship Cerritos's low-ranking and underappreciated support staff in the 24th century. The official synopsis of the show states:

"The crew is tasked with closing 'space potholes'- subspace rifts that are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for junior officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford...if they didn't also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries, and scariest of all - their own career aspirations."

The series is currently in its fifth and final season. The cast of the fifth season of the series includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Eugene Cordero, Noel Wells, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O'Connell, and Garrett Wang.

Season 5 episode 2 saw the Pirate Queen command the Blue Orions and the Tendis to put an end to their war by settling it with a high-risk race through an asteroid field.

After D'Vana discovers that her sister, D'Erika is pregnant, the former becomes protective of the latter which leads them to crash and lose the race. D'Erika then reveals that she didn't tell D'Vana that she was expecting as she didn't want D'Vana to feel obligated to guide the child and leave Starfleet.

The episode also sees two ensigns abducted by formerly wealthy Targalans who are seeking revenge for the wealth they lost. They endure their ordeal by listening to Lieutenant T'Lyn who advises them until Boimler and Mariner rescue them.
