While Peaky Blinders was mostly set in Birmingham during post the World War I era, the upcoming sequel film The Immortal Man is going to have a very different backdrop. The BBC period crime drama concluded back in April 2022 with its sixth season and ever since, Thomas Shelby has lived on among millions of hearts.
I believe he is an anti-hero, a cult figure, a manifestation of ambition (that can even get someone killed) and an epitome of fearlessness, all clubbed together - not to mention, his impeccable ability to 'think'. The last time we witnessed Tommy on screen was almost three years ago when he trotted away on his white horse (named in Grace's memory).
But now that The Immortal Man (a sequel film) is official, hopes are high among fans. And recently I also learnt that the story will be set in the 40s with the Second World War brewing and German forces on the verge of bombing Birmingham. Will Tommy (who is now a changed man, in ways) be back on the field? Will the Nazi inclined Oswald Mosley(Sam Claflin portrays) be a bigger threat this time? As Steven Knight reportedly mentioned:
"Obviously, the stakes are higher."
I just found out these mind-blowing details about the Peaky Blinders sequel
Earlier this year, creator Steven Knight dropped key details about how the plot of The Immortal Man will build up and I am more than excited about it. From what I learnt, the story will take us back to the 1940s with Britain going up against Nazi Germany.
Fascism is cropping up through leaders like Mosley and the darkest of days are looming over Small Heath, Birmingham. Cities and towns are continuously 'being carpet-bombed' and the Nazi forces are not stepping back.
Amidst all these, Tommy Shelby (who recently suffered the lost of his beloved wife Grace and Aunt Polly) is now a victim of 'existential crisis'. To quote Steven Knight's words, per Screen Rant:
"There's a lot of hedonism, there's a lot of fatalism, and you're throwing into that Tommy Shelby who was having his own existential crisis."
So now I clearly know that the Peaky Blinders are very much coming back (though in a different form) and it will mostly be Tommy Shelby himself (who went from being a gypsy and mobster to a full time politician). Though I am still not aware how the title The Immortal Man will justify the story but I am sure that Tommy's gangster associations will play a big role in protecting The Crown against the encroaching Nazi troops.
As I also learnt from various reports that the budget of the upcoming Peaky Blinders spin-off will also be 'bigger' and Knight is gathering an ensemble British cast with some of the members reprising their roles (as mentioned by the showrunner in an official statement). The production of The Immortal Man has already wrapped and from what I know, everything is so far on schedule.
