Squid Game season two came to an abrupt end with the conclusion of its seventh episode. The finale of Squid Game season two portrayed Gi-hun's last-ditch attempt at leading a rebellion against the contest itself and the elusive Front Man. However, all hopes of the rebelling contestants are dashed with Young-il reprises his role as the Front Man and kills Gi-hun's dear friend Jung-bae in Squid Game season two.

Among the supporting characters that have made a lasting impact on the audiences of Squid Game, the character of Thanos, a.k.a Player 230, reigns supreme. South Korean rapper and actor Choi Seung-hyun, also known as T.O.P., brought the character to life. The character also managed to revive his worn-out career following the stigma that was attached to him on account of his drug possession case.

Thanos was killed off at the beginning of the seventh episode of Squid Game season 2. Myung-gi thrust a knife into Thanos's neck in a desperate bid for survival while being pinned down. Thanos's death also sets in motion the killer rampage between the two opposition factions of the contestants.

With Thanos now dead and gone, the upcoming third season of Squid Game might just be the darkest as there wouldn't be any comic timing or dark humor as was dished out by Thanos himself. Here's everything we know.

Thanos was a source of dark comedy on Squid Game season two

The character of Thanos from Squid Game was a remarkably layered and nuanced invention on the part of director Hwang Dong-hyuk. Thanos is a washed-out rapper, much like Choi Seung-hyun in real life, who lost all of his fortune biddings on a dubious Bitcoin token called MG Coin.

As a result of his mounting debt, he decided to end his own life by jumping from a bridge. However, just when he was about to commit suicide, he was invited to join the brutal contest. With a huge debt on his shoulders, Thanos stepped into the games.

Thanos provided comic relief throughout the second season of the Netflix show. His antics and over-the-top gestures often evoked a sense of dark comedy and added levity to the otherwise grim atmosphere of the games.

As portrayed in the show, Thanos needs to pop a psychedelic pill every morning to keep himself together. This leads him to laugh wildly and project himself on a grand scale during the games. He is a remarkably selfish character as well, constantly thinking about his own survival at the cost of others.

With the death of Thanos, Dong-hyuk now prepares the stage to bring about a grim atmosphere in season 3 of Squid Game. Belying popular expectations, Thanos won't make it to the top three contestants. The air of irreverence and comedy that he brought with him would now be missing on the show, hinting at more sinister developments.

Hwang Dong-hyuk speaks about the character of Thanos

Thanos has verily been described as one of the most polarizing characters on the show. Dong-hyuk recently spoke in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, during which he opened up about Thanos. He stated:

"As for Thanos… he’s one of my favorite characters, too! I believe that was the right time to see him off. Although I will admit, I do think the death was sudden. It was very intense, which was the right way at just the right time for him to go. The way he leaves the story, if you watch until the third season, it will almost feel as if he’s still there in some ways in terms of how he affects the plot."

Squid Game season two is exclusively available on Netflix.
