Be it a controversy surrounding one of its cast members or a record-breaking achievement, Squid Game Season 2 continues to dominate the headlines. While it mains the core theme of the survival thriller, Season 2 comes with notable twists.
One of the twists that many didn't expect is the change in the voting system, through which players get a chance to decide if they want to quit or continue the deadly game. For the players, it's a way to regain control and decide to leave the competition if things get too dangerous.
However, it's not as democratic as it seems because the one who twisted the voting system in Squid Game Season 2 is the Front Man. By allowing the players to vote after each game, he creates the illusion of having the freedom to leave.
But in reality, it's a trap that keeps the players stuck in the cycle of danger. Front Man knows that, in the end, their greed for money will overpower their judgment and survival instincts, leading them to continue risking their lives.

Exploring Front Man's motive behind the voting system in Squid Game Season 2
It's been incredibly challenging for Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 2, as he gave it all to protect the players from the deadly game, but their greed and desperation for money ruined his plan. This is exactly what the Front Man wanted and knew, so he didn't hesitate to make the voting system mandatory after each game.
The first voting takes place in Episode 3, "001," in which the players assemble to vote after the first elimination. They have two options: "X" for no, which means they don't want to play further, and "O" for a yes, which means the players agree to step into the next round.
Another twist in this voting system that wasn't offered in Squid Game Season 1 is that if the majority agrees to quit, the accumulated prize money after each round will be equally distributed among them. This way, they will leave with some money, but again, that's too little to pay the debts each player has.
As seen in the third episode, both sides had an equal number of votes, leaving the final decision to Player 001. Turns out that the Front Man has disguised himself as Player 001 and presses "O" to continue the game.
The next two votes in Squid Game Season 2 occur in Episode 5, "One More Game," and Episode 6, "O X." Interestingly, the third voting results in a tie, and the players are asked to rethink their decision and participate in another voting.
This leads to a fight among a group of players as Thanos (Player 230) wants more people to vote for a yes and forces Player 333 to do as he says. As they get into a chaotic fight, Player 333 ends up killing Thanos.
Squid Game Season 2 ends with Gi-hun's failed rebellion, which results in several deaths, including his best friend Park Jung-bae (Player 390). Now that the number of players has reduced, it would be intriguing to see the result of the next voting in Squid Game Season 3.
What did the Squid Game creator say about the voting system twist?
At first, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk didn't plan to expand the series beyond the first season. However, when he made a final decision after the success of Season 1, Dong-hyuk ensured that the concept of choice became central to Squid Game Season 2.
The players are seen wearing the X and O badges after the voting, which highlights their decisions about the deadly game. Per Netflix Tudum, Hwang Dong-hyuk said:
"We have to be cautious when making choices, and we have to accept the consequences [of those choices]."
He added:
"I also wanted to tell the story about how the different choices we make create different conflicts and divisions. I wanted to talk about how the choices we make decide which side we end up on."
The Dong-hyuk shed light on the significance of different choices, as they often lead to conflicts and divisions, just as it's shown in the survival thriller. The decisions didn't just divide them into groups but also led to conflicts and deaths.
