Squid Game Season 2 has left fans brimming with questions on what lies ahead for protagonist Gi-hun, as well as the probable twists and new games lined up in the final chapter of the series. Season 3 will reveal if Gi-hun succeeds in putting an end to the game or dies while protecting other players.
While plot details of the upcoming third season remain under wraps, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that he wrote Seasons 2 and 3 "back-to-back", adding that the third season is expected to come out sometime this year. Season 3 will center on consequences of the events of Season 2, Dong-hyuk added.
Since Gi-hun emerged as the winner in Season 1, he is burdened with failure and grief. He has described his winnings as "blood money," because he won at the cost of hundreds of people dying on the show.
In Squid Game Season 2, Gi-hun's grief and trauma motivate him to continue the fight against the Front Man and the deadly contest, which has rounds based on children's games. However, his plans are ruined when the Front Man disguises himself as Player 001 and sabotages Gi-hun's plans of a rebellion.
Read on to explore what Hwang Dong-hyuk teased about the upcoming third season on Netflix.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk on Season 3: Gi-hun's confrontation with the Front Man
Squid Game Season 2 begins with Gi-hun spending his prize money to hunt down the Salesman. However, despite meeting the Salesman, Gi-hun fails to gain significant information. Instead, the Salesman kills himself during a game of Russian roulette and Gi-hun ends up being taken to participate in the deadly competition for the second time.
At the contest he meets his childhood best friend Park Jung-bae, who becomes Gi-hun's closest ally but ends up being killed by the end of Season 2. Not only this, Gi-hun's failed rebellion results in several deaths, adding to his drive to challenge the system and dismantle the game.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk gave certain details about Squid Game Season 3. He said:
"It’s going to arrive sometime in 2025. And the third season will really explore that sense of loss and failure, that guilt weighing so heavily on Gi-hun. How’s he going to navigate the story further with all of that weighing down on him?"
Considering the cliffhanger at the end of Season 2, Gi-hun's final confrontation with the Front Man might serve as the climax of the series. If this happens, it would be intriguing to watch two ideologies collide: Gi-hun's strong belief in humanity and the Front Man's disillusionment.
The survival thriller will end with the upcoming season as Hwang Dong-hyuk envisions Season 3 as the end of Gi-hun’s story. He aims to highlight the darker side of humanity through decisions made by players in the deadly competition, which could end soon.
However, creator Dong-hyuk did mention the possibility of expanding the Squid Game universe through a spin-off series, focusing on other characters like the soldiers in pink. A spin-off could explore their backstories, and how the soldiers ended up such a dangerous job.

Has Netflix accidentally revealed the release date of Squid Game Season 3?
Netflix Korea reportedly revealed the release date of Squid Game Season 3 in a now-deleted video, teasing the final chapter and accidentally citing June 27, 2025, as the day of lauch. If the final season drops on this date, it would be a much quicker release compared to the three-year gap between seasons 1 and 2.
Season 3 is not entirely a new season in the traditional sense of the word, but a continuation of the Season 2 storyline. The creator wrote Seasons 2 and 3 together and intentionally ended the second chapter on a cliffhanger note. The idea is to conclude the series and bring Gi-hun's journey a full circle.
