Taylor Sheridan's Special Ops: Lioness has continuously topped Nielsen's streaming charts and has successfully reeled in viewers for Paramount+.

The spy thriller follows a group of female CIA officers known as Lionesses, who are recruited under an operations in-charge and are tasked to carry out dangerous and undercover missions.

After a successful Season 1, the show returned for Season 2 on October 27, 2024, and is also expected to return for Season 3.

With an ensemble cast of Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and Laysla De Oliveira returning for a second season, Genesis Rodriguez also joined the cast in Season 2.

The show's breakthrough star, Saldana, was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her movie Emilia Pérez, and she expressed her desire to star in a potential prequel series for Special Ops: Lioness in an interview with Deadline.

More on Saldana's idea for a Special Ops: Lioness prequel in our story.

Did Special Ops: Lioness star Zoe Saldana hint at a potential spin-off series?

Zoe Saldana is the breakthrough star this year with her performance in Special Ops: Lioness as Joe McNamara, a CIA operations officer in charge of the Lioness program. The series' Season 2 was a hit on Paramount+, adding another success to the platform's partnership with Sheridan after his recent hits with Landman and Tulsa King.

Most famously known for his Neo-Western series Yellowstone, which also saw many spin-offs, Saldana opened up on the show's future for a potential prequel series. While Season 2 wrapped on December 8, 2024, it has not been renewed for Season 3.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Saldana expressed her desire to return as Zoe for a prequel series, which would center around how Kidman's Kaitlyn recruited Joe,

“Like a 1923 for Yellowstone—a subplot that can run in parallel with anything else. I would’ve loved to see the beginnings of the Kaitlyn Meade and Joe McNamara and how she was recruited, because she’s just so good. And there’s a scene there where Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly) tells her, ‘You can’t be in the field anymore. I can’t replace you.’ And that was a really good scene there. And then it made me wonder how Kaitlyn found Joe and how Kaitlyn recruited Joe. It would be really interesting.”

Can there be a Special Ops: Lioness prequel? Possibilities explored

Considering Sheridan has not shied away from a plethora of Yellowstone spin-offs, the idea that Special Ops: Lioness also gets its prequel series is not completely bizarre.

In addition, for a platform like Paramount+, which does not have the global reach of Netflix yet, this partnership with Sheridan is fruitful and results in good ratings, so it is expected that they might team up for a prequel series.

Saldana's idea about the Special Ops: Lioness prequel is also very intriguing as it would give more depth to her character, Zoe, and the audience would connect more with her if she returned for Season 3. While the show has not been officially renewed, there are reports that it has been unofficially renewed for Season 3, and Saldana will allegedly return as Zoe in Season 3.

A prequel series focusing on the rich background storyline for Zoe and Kaitlyn would enrich and provide depth to their characters. While nothing is confirmed yet, we hope there is news about the show's future soon.
