Smoke is the newest entrant on Apple TV+’s long list of intriguing shows. Starring Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett, the series will revolve around an arson investigator and a detective who team up to track down two arsonists.
The series is based on the true-crime podcast Firebug, which in turn was based on the crimes of John Leonard Orr, an arsonist who has been convicted of four murders. The project was announced in December 2022.

The release date of Smoke

Smoke will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 27, 2025. The show will feature nine episodes, of which two episodes will be dropped together on the premiere day. After this, the series will start following a weekly release schedule, airing one episode every Friday.
The finale is scheduled to be released on August 8, 2025. The series was initially titled Firebug, inspired by the eponymous podcast, but the name has now been changed to Smoke.
The storyline of Smoke
Apple TV+ has unveiled the official logline for the series, per which it follows Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator, and Michell Calderon, a detective. The two have to collaborate to investigate two serial arsonists before they wreak havoc in the Pacific Northwest.
The series is inspired by the real-world crimes of John Leonard Orr. A former firefighter, John is a convicted arsonist who set at least 2,000 fires in the U.S. over a period of three decades. The synopsis for the show reads:
“Inspired by true events, 'Smoke' follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.”
The star cast of Smoke
The show stars Taron Egerton as Dave Gudsen. The Golden Globe Award-winning actor is known for his roles in the films Rocketman, Billionaire Boys Club, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Carry-On.
Jurnee Smollett plays Detective Michell Calderon. The Emmy-nominated actress is famous for her performances in shows like Lovecraft Country, True Blood, and Friday Night Lights. Her film credits include The Burial, We Grown Now, and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.
The rest of the cast includes Rafe Spall as Steven Burk, Ntare Mwine as Freddy Fasano, John Leguizamo as Esposito, Greg Kinnear as Harvey Englehart, Hannah Emily Anderson as Ashley Gudsen, Adina Porter as Brenda Cephus, Michael Buie as Gerard, Dakota Daulby as Lee, and Anna Chlumsky in an undisclosed role. The series was created by Dennis Lehane, who previously collaborated with Taron Egerton on the Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird. He has also worked on the shows Mr. Mercedes, Boardwalk Empire, and The Outsider.
