The penultimate episode of Slow Horses season 4 effectively addressed the few remaining mysteries and shed light on the final expository elements in the storytelling that would play a major role in the finale. Frank Harkness paid a visit to Molly Doran. Frank revealed that his plans to misguide MI5 have been foiled following the discovery of Robert Winters' body.

Flyte, along with Dogs (the internal security division of the MI5 service), invaded David's house to get their hands on River, who initially offers a bit of resistance, but is eventually subdued. He eventually shows Flyte the photos he was able to salvage from Les Arbes. Upon recognizing the men in the photo, Flyte is able to join the dots and associate Winters with the West Acres bombing.

The ending of the episode also saw Flyte and River embroiled in a shootout after Patrice successfully traces the car used by the Dogs. Patrice then announces his arrival with guns blazing and some heavy firepower against the Dogs, whom he successfully wipes out. This leaves River pretty exposed as he is still tied to the side of Flyte's car in cuffs.

Patrice eventually knocks down Flyte and turns his attention on River. However, belying expectations, Patrice fires a shot at River's cuffs to set him free.
