Pay attention Witcher fans! The beloved franchise continues to expand with yet another exciting project. Netflix has confirmed The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep will release on February 11, 2025. The animated film promises a new thrilling adventure with Geralt of Rivia as the focus.
As shared by Netflix:
"When human sailors are attacked by mysterious creatures of the deep, only one person can stop the war between land and sea: the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia."
However, the upcoming animated film reminds us of Henry Cavill's departure from the live-action series, which has saddened fans. While the actor is widely lauded for his role as Superman, fans also know him for playing Geralt over three seasons in the Netflix show. His departure broke many hearts.
The arrival of Sirens of the Deep is a reminder that Cavill no longer portrays the popular character. However, the return of Doug Cockle, the original voice actor behind Geralt of Rivia in the video games provides a sense of continuity and nostalgia for longtime enthusiasts.
Per Netflix, Cockle shared:
"I am super excited to announce my return to the world of The Witcher voicing Geralt of Rivia once again. I’m thrilled to be able to share this next chapter of the White Wolf’s journey with fans... Mire taedh aen stráede!"
Read on to learn more about the upcoming animated film, and whether it takes place during the timeline when Henry Cavill played Geralt in the live-action series.
How The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep highlights Henry Cavill's exit from the live-action series
If the new film highlights once again reminds of Henry Cavill's departure from the live-action series, the setting of the animation film should draw the attention of the actor's fans. Netflix has shared that events in the upcoming film are based on Andrzej Sapkowski's short story, A Little Sacrifice, and are set between Episodes 5 and 6 of the live-action series' Season 1.
This means the story occurs when Cavill is still actively portraying Geralt and, as seen in the trailer, Geralt is designed to look like Cavill’s version of the character. Moreover, Dough Cockle's casting in the animated film offers a silver lining.
The voice actor is also set to reprise his role in the fourth upcoming game but isn't sure about how much the character will be seen. He shared in an interview with Fall Damage:
"We know that Geralt will be part of the game, we just don’t know how much. The game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time. We don’t know who it’s about, I’m excited to find out!"
While we don't know much about the character's presence in the next game, Geralt of Rivia is the focus of Netflix's The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep. So, make sure you don't miss out on witnessing the inter-species conflicts and alliances.
What else do we know about Netflix's The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep animated film?
While Cockle voices the lead character in The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, the talented cast also includes Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Christina Wren as Essi Daven, and Joey Batey behind the beloved bard Jaskier.
