Steve Zahn joined Apple TV+’s Silo in the second season as Solo and has already become a fan-favorite. Solo is the only survivor of a rebellion who has an adorable personality but can snap at times due to his awkward nature as he has spent decades alone.

When Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson, can survive going out of her underground community and reaches Silo 17, she encounters Solo, who agrees to help her return to her home.

Steve Zahn has opened up about his role in the show in an interview, revealing that he has a fear about his character. The actor said he had to grow a beard for the role, which also helps him in his performance, and his worst nightmare is his beard being shaved.

Solo is known for his signature beard and long hair, a look that shows how the man has been alone for years. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Zahn talked about how the bearded look helps in his job.

The actor said when he sees himself with his long facial hair, he is reminded of Solo, which keeps him in his character. On the other hand, if he had to shave it, he might not be able to play the role as perfectly:

“If you change your look, there’s something about that which also really helps. You look in the mirror every day and you’re reminded of a character.”

Zahn further talked about being scared of getting his beard shaved, which could negatively affect his acting on the show:

“I would have nightmares. Rick Gomez [who plays Patrick Kennedy] has this too. It’s like the [actor’s nightmare] of you walk out onstage and everybody’s like, ‘You’re so good!’ backstage, and you walk out and you go, ‘I don’t know what I’m doing.’ Our actor’s nightmare was that I’d shaved my beard. I would wake up going, ‘Ahh!’”

Having nightmares about a thing that could impact his performance only shows Zahn’s dedication to his craft. Fortunately, the bad dream has not come true for now, as Solo continues to have a beard in the show. Apart from the Apple TV+ series, Zahn has starred in shows like Mad Dogs, The Crossing, and The White Lotus.

Juliette comes across Steve Zahn’s Solo in the show’s second season when she reaches Silo 17. Solo lives all alone in the underground bunker and reveals a secret to her: there are many silos and her actions might lead to a rebellion in her home community.

At first, Solo does not want to help her get back, but he changes his mind later. Together, they build an air pump and find a firefighter suit so she can get through the flooded parts. Solo is scared to leave his vault because he has been lonely for so long.

Later, Juliette finds other people living in Silo 17. Their leader, Audrey, is angry with Solo because he killed their parents during a past rebellion. But Solo explains he was just a kid trying to stay safe.

Juliette eventually helps everyone understand each other, and they decide to work together. Solo even opens his vault to the group, showing he is starting to trust people again.

In season 2, episode 9, it is revealed that Solo is Jimmy Conroy, the son of Russell Conroy, the head of Silo 17’s IT, which could change the course of his story.

Silo season 2 will air its final episode on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025.
