The Silo season 2 finale titled 'Into The Fire' showcases Bernard Holland, the mayor of the Silo, witnessing things going out of hand by the end. As a result of growing rebellion in the Silo and people becoming more aware of his authoritative reign, he is tricked by lower-level officials in the finale.

The entire season 1 comes with a glimpse of a key Bernard uses every time something goes wrong in the Silo. The key with numbers written on it is a major indication that there are more than one Silos. The key vibrates and blinks red when Juliette defies the cleaning protocol. But in the Season 2 finale, it stops blinking. What does it mean? Are things out of Bernard's hands now?

Shirley Campbell informs the other members about the survival of Juliette, while Pete Nichols plans to retaliate against Bernard Holland's oppressive reign by planting a bomb inside the Silo.

Bernard, tricked by the lower-level officials, gets to know about the bomb later and tries to neutralize it. He further empties a cell and locks all the officials and followers there.

Every time something goes wrong, Bernard's key blinks, signaling him to take quick steps about it, and he disappears. Where he disappears is not clearly shown in the series. Even when the rebellion is brewing Bernard's key indicates him to do something about it before things go out of hand.

By the end of Season 2, the key stops to blink. This suggests that there is nothing Bernard can do about it now and they are all doomed. This also questions the extent of Bernard's control and the reliability and security of the silo's technology. Bernard proves to be unworthy to save his Silo.

The algorithm is an AI tool that makes sure all Silos follow the founder's rules. Probably, Bernard also uses this set of rules by the founders to decide the definitive step to be taken according to different situations. Therefore the failure of the blinking mechanism also reflects increasing instability inside the Silo.

Bernard's untimely resignation and surrender to the system's inevitable collapse represent a pivotal narrative moment. Knowing the truth from Lukas when he decodes Salvador Quinn's letter that says "If you’ve gotten this far you already know the game is rigged." Bernard realizes that Silo's origin was never to safeguard its residents but was designed as an experiment rooted in control. Therefore his resignation is a result of him realizing these inherent flaws of the Silo.

Though he has been complicit in upholding the inherent oppressive system, this move of his reflects his internal guilt and crushing weight over his heart.
