Shrinking is a hilarious, yet heartwarming comedy-drama on Apple TV+ that's been making waves. The co-creator, Bill Lawrence, just spilled the beans that the upcoming Season 3 could very well be the grand finale. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, herevealed that the whole series was kind of planned out as a three-part journey about dealing with loss, letting go, and finding your way again.

He said:

“I think this story is over in three seasons... If we started the fourth season with Jason Segel going, ‘I’m still so sad about my wife dying,’ people would be like [makes a pained face].”

The show, featuring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, has really hit the nail on the head with how it shows people coping with loss and finding their way again. It's also about those heartfelt moments that connect us all as humans.

They've already started shooting the third season, and apparently, Lawrence has dropped hints in an interview that there might be some surprises in there that could point to some spin-off ideas.

Why Shrinking Season 3 might be the last?

But, why stop at Season 3, you ask? Well, Bill Lawrence's words suggest he's got a thoughtful approach to how this story unfolds.

“One of the cool things about streaming is you can do a three-season story with a beginning, middle, and end,” he noted.

This way of setting things up means that the people who make the show, like Lawrence with Segel and Goldstein, can keep the storylines fresh and not get stuck repeating the same old stuff. Goldstein's part, playing Louis, is important for what happens in the third season.

In the last episode of the second season, Louis has to deal with some pretty serious thoughts about suicide. It's a powerful part of the show because it mixes funny moments with deep feelings. Lawrence made it clear that Louis, trying to forgive Jimmy and move on from their issues, isn't finished yet.

He said,

“It would be weird not to include his character as part of moving forward.”

The Easter eggs hidden in Shrinking Season 3 are giving fans some ideas about what might happen in the show's future stories. The writing team is good at hinting at new possibilities. But, Lawrence said that they've made sure the end of the season wraps everything up nicely.

Brett Goldstein, who wowed everyone with his award-winning performance in Ted Lasso, brings something completely new to the table as Louis in the show Shrinking. He's not the tough guy Roy Kent here; instead, he's this fragile and open-hearted character that people can't help but feel for.

The way Louis' story unfolds, especially his moments with Jimmy, is what makes Shrinking so special. In the last episode of Season 2, Louis hits rock bottom after being left out of Thanksgiving, and it gets pretty intense at a train station.

Jimmy stepping in doesn't just stop something bad from happening to Louis; it actually makes their bond stronger. It's like a turning point for them.

The creator of Shrinking, Lawrence, talked about it, saying:

“We wanted the finale to show how forgiveness can wipe away so many bad things... It’s emotionally resolved in a way I hope people feel good.”

Now that we know Goldstein is returning for Shrinking Season 3, fans are psyched to see more of Louis' journey and how his relationship with Jimmy unfolds.

It seems like their complicated bond will be in focus in the last season, and everyone's hoping it'll wrap up in a way that hits home with the show's main ideas.

What’s next for Shrinking’s cast and creators?

Even though Shrinking is close to wrapping up, the people who made it and the actors in it have lots of cool stuff coming up next. Bill Lawrence is cooking up a new HBO show with Steve Carell and Phil Dunster from Ted Lasso.

Jason Segel, the guy who plays Jimmy, is keeping busy in the movie world with all sorts of projects, from being in front of the camera to writing behind it. Then there's Harrison Ford, a superstar who has continued to add new dimensions to his role as Dr. Paul Rhoades on the show.

He's been really good at hopping from movies to TV. The whole cast, like Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, and Christa Miller, are all top performers and it will be interesting to see how they portray their characters in the last part of Shrinking.

Shrinking has etched a permanent mark as the emotional exploration of sorrow and its healing. Although Season 3 would conclude their journey, the impact should linger forever.
