2 Broke Girls actress Kat Dennings, who had gloriously struck gold in her debut role, has now returned to sitcoms, making a splash with Shifting Gears on ABC.
Shifting Gears, which premiered in January 2025, stars Dennings as Riley, a single mother rekindling contact with her father, Tim Allen.
Returning to the multi-camera comedy format, Dennings is relying on her forte, which is excellent comedic timing.
Embracing the Sitcom Format Again
Dennings' return to sitcoms is a significant shift in her career trajectory. Reflecting on this transition, she expressed enthusiasm about re-engaging with the multi-camera format, noting its unique energy. As reported by Collider, in a recent interview, she stated,
"They feel almost like another character. They’re a tool. We know something works if they laugh"
Cooperating with Tim Allen has been one of Dennings' highlights. She considers Allen a great source of comedic talent, eventually gelling with him as they worked together. As reported by Comic Book Resources, she said:
"Tim and I have such a fantastic relationship that we can really balance each other out in all these scenes, and we know what to do with them so that it’s still fun."
Personal Growth and New Perspectives
Apart from her professional life, Dennings has had significant personal growth, especially concerning relationships and marriage. She previously agreed with Whoopi Goldberg's saying that she prefers to be alone, famously stating:
"I don't want somebody in my house."
However, everything changed when she met Andrew W.K. They got married in November 2023, which has been an eye-opener for Dennings:
"Those were my feelings towards marriage in general until I met my husband. And now I like him in my house. I want him in my house!"
As a performer, she's been able to go deeper into character. She has a much clearer understanding of relationships and their dynamics.
With "Shifting Gears," the audience can anticipate a series that will balance humor with genuine storytelling through Dennings' portrayal as a woman coming to grips with the complexities of parenthood.
