It has been more than seven years since the release of new episodes of BBC’s Sherlock. The Emmy Award-winning series is known for masterfully portraying Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery stories in a modern setting, with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the genius Sherlock Holmes.

The mystery crime drama’s season 4 aired in January 2017 and fans have been waiting for updates on the next season ever since. However, the creators have not yet confirmed if there will be more episodes in the series.

From the story point of view, season 4 wrapped up some plotlines but left the audience with a few lingering questions that could be answered in season 5, if it becomes a reality.

If Sherlock Season 5 happens, it can feature a number of unresolved stories from the previous seasons. In season 4, episode 3, which is considered the series finale for now, there is a violin duet between Sherlock and Eurus.

This hints at the possibility of the siblings working together in the future. Eurus has a brilliant mind but is a dangerous individual at the same time. Sherlock might need her help to solve a difficult case, but he needs to be aware that trusting her would be risky.

Sherlock and Molly’s Relationship can also be explored going forward as Molly has confessed his love for him, which still needs to be addressed. The two need to figure out if they want to get involved romantically or be just friends.

Meanwhile, Mycroft, Sherlock’s brother, is a standout in season 4 as his work for the government and his family secrets come into the spotlight. A potential season 5 can focus more on his mysterious career and the secrets he has been hiding.

Coming to John Watson, he is now raising his daughter, Rosie, on his own after the death of his wife, Mary. Season 5 could show how John will balance being a father while working on dangerous cases alongside Sherlock. This could add an emotional layer to his character.

Eurus can also be a key character in the next season, as apart from her bond with Sherlock, her time at the high-security asylum Sherrinford can be explored in depth. Now that she has killed the Garrideb brothers, their family might blame Sherlock.

This could damage Sherlock’s reputation and force him to take on less extravagant and more personal cases, bringing back the charm of the earlier seasons. Eurus’ connection to Moriarty also remains a mystery for now, which can be revealed in the next season, marking the return of the show’s most iconic villain.

Another plot point that could be seen in season 5 is the effect of Victor Trevor’s death on his family. Victor, Sherlock’s childhood friend, is murdered by Eurus. As the detective grapples with his loss, it will be interesting to see how he deals with the grief in the future.

Sherlock’s supposed childhood dog, Redbeard, also symbolizes Victor, which could further be explored in the next season, showing how the detective’s childhood trauma shaped his mind and relationships.

Irene Adler, aka ‘The Woman,’ has always been a complicated figure in the show. Her probable return to the series in season 5 could challenge Sherlock in ways no case ever could.

Additionally, Mycroft’s strange fear of clowns is seen as a minor plot in the show, but it could lead to the revelation of something surprising about his past. However, all this would happen only if BBC and the makers decide to renew the show for another installment.

Sherlock seasons 1 to 4 can be watched on Hulu.
