As RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 heads toward its grand finale with only five queens remaining, fans and former contestants alike are placing their bets on potential winners. Alaska Thunderf----, the beloved winner of All Stars 2 and season 5 finalist, recently shared their insights on the current competition.
Currently starring in and co-writing Drag: The Musical Off-Broadway until April 27, Alaska has remained a prominent figure in the drag world since their competitive days.
During an interview, the "Sweatpants" singer enthusiastically discussed RuPaul’s Drag Race frontrunners Lexi Love, Suzie Toot, and others still vying for the crown. With Jewels Sparkles, Suzie Toot, Onya Nurve, Sam Star, and Lexi Love left standing, Alaska offered unique perspectives from both industry experience and audience reactions witnessed during their recent Australian tour.
Beyond Season 17 predictions, Alaska also addressed the possibility of returning for a potential All Winners season with surprising candor about their willingness to compete again under RuPaul's watchful eye.
RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Alaska talks about season 17 contestants
When discussing the current season's competitors, Alaska didn't hesitate to highlight the overwhelming audience support for one queen in particular. Based on reactions during their recent Australian tour, Lexi Love has clearly captured viewers' hearts.
"We recently were on the road in Australia, and this was at the beginning of the season and we were asking the audience every night: 'Who are you living for? Who is your gal?', and, pretty much unanimously Lexi Love is beloved and people are just like really rallying behind her," Alaska shared.
Their appreciation for Lexi goes beyond mere popularity, noting specific qualities that make her stand out from the competition:
"And I get it because she's like she's a captivating character, she's beautiful, she's hilarious. So I think that she will be making into the final."
This endorsement from a RuPaul’s Drag Race legend carries significant weight, especially considering Alaska's experience both competing on the show and analyzing it through their "Race Chaser" podcast, which they co-host with fellow queens Willam and Naomi Smalls.
While Lexi Love received the strongest endorsement, Alaska expressed support for other competitors as well. Prior to our interview, Alaska had high hopes for Lana Ja'Rae, who, unfortunately, was eliminated shortly after our conversation.
"I hope Lana Ja'Ray makes her way into the final as well, that's Luxx's daughter so I'm pulling for her," they said.
This connection highlights the drag family relationships that extend beyond individual seasons, as Lana is the drag daughter of Season 15 contestant Luxx Noir London, who currently performs alongside Alaska in Drag: The Musical.
Alaska also recognized Suzie Toot's consistent performance throughout the season:
"I think Suzie Toot has been doing really well this season and I think that she's going to make it to the final as well."
When pressed about who might ultimately take the crown, Alaska remained diplomatic, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the final competition:
"Anything can happen on that finale night. You never know."
Returning to the show and life beyond
Beyond their thoughts on the current season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Alaska expressed remarkable enthusiasm about potentially returning to compete on a future All Winners season, should the opportunity arise.
"Always. Yes. A hundred times. If RuPaul called me I would go," they stated without hesitation.
This eagerness stems from gratitude for what the show has meant to their career:
"My life changed getting to be a part of this show. If she wanted me there, which, you know, I don't think they're going to call me, but if they did I would definitely go."
The idea of an expanded All Winners season that could include international winners intrigued Alaska as well:
"Oh my God, I don't know! There's so many at this point. I don't know, I think we could go international, there are so many franchises to draw from."
Their final sentiment on the matter couldn't be clearer:
"I'm so down. And I would have the time of my life."
Alaska continues to broaden their artistic horizons while maintaining ties to the Drag Race universe through their podcast and fan interactions. As a performer and writer, they are now working on Drag: The Musical at New World Stages in New York City.
Fans have a short chance to watch Alaska with other drag artists, such as Luxx Noir London, who portrays Popcorn, during the limited engagement, which ends on April 27.
With Alaska being one of the most successful instances, these imaginative endeavors show how competitors may use their RuPaul’s Drag Race platform to pursue a variety of entertainment jobs. Alaska has developed a diverse career while keeping connections to the program that brought them fame, from music releases like "Sweatpants" to theatrical performances, podcasts, and touring.
