Severance Season 2 Episode 4, named Woe’s Hollow, has fans buzzing about a new puzzling clue. This time it is the acronym ORTBO. As Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving head out on their first-ever outdoor retreat and team-building event, viewers caught on that ORTBO is a jumbled version of the word "robot." That’s a peculiar tidbit and might hint at something creepy with Lumon Industries.

Maybe the plan at Lumon isn’t just about controlling minds at work, but replacing humans with robots entirely, and wiping out free will for good. The show has kept dropping hints with the introduction of copies of the MDR team that look like they are straight out of a weird virtual reality. These copies are unsettling doppelgängers, and they make you think twice about what’s going on.

Some might say it’s just a red herring to throw us off the scent, but Severance has a knack for turning even the tiniest detail into a big deal. So, we can’t ignore it. With Lumon’s history of playing fast and loose with the truth, you’ve got to question everything.

Is ORTBO a nod to Lumon’s true goals on Severance?

On Woe’s Hollow, the team goes on a little adventure — a two-day trip into the Dieter Eagan National Forest. This place has a backstory. It is actually named after the twin brother of Kier Eagan.

The leader for the outing is Seth Milchick, who tells them:

“Kier’s twin was always with him.”

This shows that the concept of duality is important in Severance. It's spooky when you think about those identical copies of the characters running around — the lines between humans and machines are getting blurry at Lumon.

The thing about ORTBO pointing towards a future with robots is tied up with the theory Kier Eagan had. He talked about four Tempers — woe, frolic, dread, and malice — and he wanted to keep these in check, as mentioned earlier on Severance.

If Lumon's big plan is to swap humans for robots, this could be their way of making sure that the robots only have the feelings they want them to have. They're trying to build workers who are loyal and only do what the company wants.

So, according to Dexerto,

“A leading theory is that the true goal is for the Innies to complete their work and then overtake their Outies permanently.”

When you think about the eerie vibe about the twins from the MDR team, it's seems more like people are running on a program than they are real folks. With Lumon being the mysterious company it is in Severance, even the wildest ideas might have some truth to them.

ORTBO fits into the expanding world of Severance

Even with this convincing theory, the real deal with ORTBO is still puzzling. What Matt & Jess TV Commentary brings up is:

“The true nature of this story is still shrouded in a certain amount of mystery.”

The summary of the episode hints at characters “traversing unfamiliar terrain” and Irving starting to doubt a friend, leaving us eager for more juicy details to come to light. Severance is known for taking its sweet time with big reveals, so the show's creators have a whole season of 10 episodes to explore what ORTBO means.

It's clear they didn't just throw that acronym without a good reason. ORTBO is surely a part of Lumon's deep, hidden backstory.

For the time being, we will keep guessing but we are sure the show has more twists up its sleeve. You can catch the first four episodes of Severance Season 2 on Apple TV+, with fresh ones dropping every week.
