The final few episodes of the Apple TV+ series untangled several cliffhangers while somehow setting up even more of them for Severance Season 3. As another year comes to an end at Lumon, producer Ben Stilles might be using subtle foreshadowing to hint at a power struggle for leadership at Lumon.

Unpacking the Finale and what it means for Severance Season 3

The most awaited second season of Severance premiered on Jan 17 and has finally come to an end on March 21 with its tenth and finale episode. The finale episode answered a lot of questions for the fans in terms of the central love story between two innies which producer Ben Stiller describes as "Young love running into the pits of hell."

Considering Severance Season 3 has been renewed, the season finale sets up intriguing questions for the new season to follow through on. One of these questions is the upcoming power struggle alluded to through subtle foreshadowing. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, actress Britt Lower, who plays both Helena Eagan and Helly R, pointed out a subtle difference between the dietary preferences of the Eagan heiress and her severed innie. This difference might be alluding to a power struggle between the heiress and her innie.

In Severance Season 2 Episode 9, Eagan is observed eating hard-boiled eggs while her father Jame Eagan, the CEO of Lumon, silently observes her. It is clear in this disturbing scene that Helena is not a fan of the eggs as pointed out by Lower in her interview,

Do you see the way that she eats those? She's like, I'm going to eat as little of this as possible.

This exchange by itself does not reveal anything of importance for the upcoming Severance Season 3. However, when paired with some facts from the first season of the series, this makes up an interesting coincidence. It is revealed in the second episode of season one that Kier Eagan, the founder of CEO, had a different preference. Mr. Milchick, played by Tramell Tillman, reveals an Eagan tradition where Kier preferred raw eggs and milk as his favorite breakfast combination. It could easily be considered pure coincidence that two people from the same family line have different preferences for breakfast. But, a callback to another episode in season one reveals that Helly R, Helena's innie, really liked the hard-boiled eggs. Helena's innie thought that the eggs were "pretty good" at the egg-bar social.

What does this mean for Lumon's future in Severance Season 3?

It is no secret that Helena Eagan does not believe that her rebellious inner consciousness has any rights or personality. She makes this clear by twice rejecting resignation attempts from her inner self even under threats of bodily harm and suicide. This difference in breakfast preferences, a window into the Eagan family tradition, takes a larger inference as Jame appears interested in his daughter's rebellious innie. In the season finale of Severance Season 2, Jame Eagan is seen visiting his daughter's innie and proclaiming that he does not love his daughter. He adds that Helly has a "fire", a rebellious streak much like Kier, and that is valuable to him. This statement when paired with the egg scenes opens up a much larger avenue to be explored by Severance Season 3.

Even though Jame appears to be preparing Helena to take over the Eagan family legacy and Lumos in Severance Season 3, this declaration upends the company's future. Jame's interest in his daughter's rebellious innie, paired with the unique personality traits in the severed selves, is a sign that he has started to see the selves as two different individuals. This realization paves the way for an interesting struggle for the company's leadership. The Lumon CEO, James Eagan, might just prefer his daughter's innie for her rebellious "fire" over her outie to take over Kier's legacy.

Only time will tell if Severance Season 3 becomes the stage for the showdown between Helena Eagan and Helly R, as Jame decides who will honor Kier's legacy and guide Lumon towards its final goal of eliminating all human feelings to make the perfect worker.
