The Wakeup protocol day in season 1, which allowed them to have some control over their Outties and Innies altogether, brings out some shocking revelations about their lives. This is how Mark gets to know that his dead wife's Innie is working with him at Lumon and that Ms. Casey is the Innie self of Gemma.

This mystery further leads to him embarking on a journey to find her real self, Gemma. When Helly gets to know about this, she feels moved. She sees Mark's quest as an important way forward to bring Lumon down. She shares Mark’s broader mission of uncovering the truth about Lumon's experiments, including its severance process, which keeps employees trapped in manipulated dual lives.

On the other hand, she hates that her Outtie is Lumon's CEO James Eagan's daughter, and is encouraging the oppressive system. Her Outtie also offers herself to get severed to support the success of the experiment. It didn't stem from anything personal but was a purely ideological move to endorse the technology. Moreover, she is also spiraling if the other MDR severed fellow employees will now be able to trust him after knowing the truth about her Outtie.

In season 1 of Severance Helly was determined to escape Lumon and she took some harsh measures to do so as well. But it's only in season 2 she now feels at home in Lumon. This is because of her connection with fellow Lumon employees, especially Mark. The show also shows a small scene in season 1 of Severance where we can see Helly kissing Mark during a pivotal moment of solidarity. This shows their Innies increasing connection.

According to some reports, another theory is looming around Helly extending a helping hand for Mark. It is speculated that Helly's Outtie has been replaced with her Innie therefore, her helping Mark is simply a step to cover up her larger agendas and evade suspicion. If this is true, it could prove to be a major turning point in the series.
