Disclaimer: Severance Season 2 spoilers and opinions ahead!
The new season has started fresh talks about the show's LGBTQ+ characters. In Season 2, there's a key scene where Devon (played by Jen Tullock) tells Mark she had a crush on the pregnant lady from their birthing camp in Season 1. This has made fans wonder: Was Devon meant to be bisexual from the beginning?
Jen Tullock confirmed in a Parade interview that, yes, she and Dan Erickson always had thought of Devon as a bisexual character on Severance.
Tullock explained:
“Dan and I had talked about Devon’s backstory, and that she was probably queer and dated people of all genders before meeting Ricken.”
Before this moment, the show hadn't directly talked about Devon's sexuality. Tullock improvised this line on the spot, and it ended up in the final version.
She also hinted that there was once a story with a female love interest for Devon. This leaves fans to think about what else could have been shown.
How queer is Devon’s from Severance?
Jen Tullock revealed in a Parade interview that Devon's bisexuality is an integral part of her character's background. According to Tullock, Devon's sexuality wasn't just thrown in randomly but was carefully considered.
She explained to Parade in 2025 that Devon may have had:
“A hot rugby-playing girlfriend for a long time.”
She also went to Bennington, a school known for being open-minded. The people who wrote her story didn't make her being lesbian the main thing about her. This goes with how the show Severance usually tells stories. It's more about who people are deep down, not just their identity.
Tullock agreed that you don't have to talk about being queer all the time.
She said:
“I think as an equal-opportunity, a queer person isn’t necessarily talking about it constantly.”
Severance mirrors real life well by treating sexuality as a normal part of a character's identity. It includes Devon's queer identity in a way that feels natural, not like it's just there for show.
This helps avoid making LGBTQ+ characters seem like tokens or like their sexuality is the only important thing about them. The integration is smooth and doesn't feel forced, which is a refreshing way to represent these identities on TV.
Severance’s expanding list of LGBTQ+ actors
Severance has been subtly but successfully presenting queer representation since the start of the show. The bond between characters Burt, played by Christopher Walken, and Irving, portrayed by John Turturro, was a hit among viewers. Season 2 brought in a flirty vibe between Irving and Dylan, played by Zach Cherry.
Off-screen, some main cast members of Severance also belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Tramell Tillman, who acts as Seth Milchick, is openly gay and has discussed the significance of Black queer visibility, as reported by The Cut.
In her personal life, the actress who plays Devon, Jen Tullock, married her wife, Marie Ronn, in 2023, as per The New York Times.
Interestingly, Christopher Walken once identified as bisexual in a 1973 interview with After Dark, stating,
“I’d hate to think that I was harnessed to heterosexuality.”
This doesn't affect the plot directly, but it gives the show an interesting historical backdrop with a diverse cast.
Severance handles LGBTQ+ stories in a subtle yet meaningful way. It doesn't use queerness as just a story trick. Instead, it fits in naturally, like how LGBTQ+ people live in all parts of the real world.
New episodes come out every Friday at 3:00 am Eastern Time on Apple TV+.
