Following much anticipation, the second season of Severance recently premiered on January 17. With the rave reviews and exemplary success enjoyed by the first season of Severance, it is fair to say that the second installment had a tall work order to fulfill.

Nevertheless, the premiere episode has kickstarted the second season on a firm footing, marking Adam Scott reprising his popular role. Apart from the strangely entertaining world of Innies and Outies roaming around Lumon, the soundtrack for the first episode of season 2 has been greatly praised.

Like most modern shows, Severance employs a skillful combination of existing music and an original score to enhance the mood and atmosphere of the Apple TV+ show. During the premiere episode, the track God Walked Down by The Allergies is featured. Along with the existing musical tracks, Theodore Shapiro composed the riveting background music

Theodore Shapiro is a recipient of the 2022 Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series/Dramatic Score. Speaking about the score of Severance season two, Shapiro revealed to Gold Derby:

"In this show, we worked with such a minimal palate. A lot of times, what can work best in terms of creepiness is just utter simplicity. Sometimes just a few notes on the piano are enough to be scarier than a 90-piece orchestra doing crazy stuff. I love shows or films that work with a minimal palate like that, so that was a great gift to be able to play in that kind of a sandbox.”

Here's everything that we know.

Revisiting the soundtrack of Severance Season 1

The practice of effectively combining musical numbers with a haunting background score began for Severance with the debut season itself. The first season featured the following tracks in addition to its original BGM:

  • Daydream in Blue by I Monster
  • Ace of Spades by Motorhead
  • Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me by Mac Davis
  • I'll Be Seeing You by Bille Holiday
  • The Times of Your Life by Paul Anka
  • Your Mind Is On Vacation by Mose Allison

Theodore Shapiro opens up about working on Severance

In an interview with Gold Derby, composer Theodore Shapiro opened up about his association with the Apple TV+ show. When asked about how he came on board the show, Shapiro revealed:

"I first learned about this show very casually at a Halloween party. I was with Adam Scott, who I know because our kids go to school together. He mentioned that he was working on this series with Ben Stiller. He mentioned a little something about what the premise was and it sounded amazing. I sort of thought, ‘I hope I get that call.’ In late 2019 Ben called and told me about the series and he sent me a couple of scripts. It was immediately so thrilling and sparked so many ideas. I started writing themes immediately."

He further added:

"We met and he (Ben Stiller) showed me all of the drawings and the look-books. He kept fast-forwarding to this section that had this chord progression. I thought, ‘There’s something he’s responding to here that should be expanded on.’ When I got back to Los Angeles, I sat down at the piano and I started playing that chord progression, but just on the piano and I was like, ‘Oh, here’s something really cool.’ This takes the whole score and instead of emphasizing a more science-fiction aspect to it, it really zeroes in on the mystery of what’s happening at Lumon.”
