Severance season 2 is all set to hit the screens on January 17, 2025, after a wait of three years. To add to the excitement, Apple TV+ has released the official trailer of the upcoming season.
The second season continues the journey of protagonist Mark Scout and his friends, who have to deal with the aftermath of trying to expose Lumon Industries’ severance program, which severs employee memories between work life and personal life, in a way they don't remember their hours at work once they leave office for home and vice versa.
The trailer of Severance season 2 offers a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming episodes. The footage answers some questions left fans asking for more after the first season’s finale, and also introduces new mysteries.
5 big reveals in Severance season 2 trailer
Severance season 2 trailer hints at growing chaos as the story moves beyond the corporate setting of Lumon Industries and ventures into the personal lives of the characters. Here are five major reveals from the trailer and what they could mean in the upcoming season:
1) Mark wants to rescue Ms. Casey
Mark learns Ms. Casey is actually his wife, Gemma, believed to be dead after an accident but somehow brought back to life through Lumon’s experiments. He sets out on a mission to save her but Lumon’s security makes it impossible and manager Milchick is always watching him.
The trailer hints that Mark may find some answers on the ‘testing floor,’ a mysterious part of the Lumon facility. In fact, Mark’s mission to rescue Ms. Casey could drive much of the action this season.
2) What are the severance reforms?
In season 1, Helly’s revelation about the severance procedure at a Lumon gala meant the company could land in trouble. However, the trailer of the second season shows that the team is back together, with Milchick calling them the "face of severance reform."
While a newspaper reports on the developments, it looks like the company is trying to cover up the truth. The firm’s decision to not punish the team for exposing their secrets hints at the fact that Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving are a part of a bigger plan at Lumon.
3) The mystery around MDR’s actual work
In the trailer, a Lumon employee claims that MDR’s work will go down as "one of the greatest moments on this planet." That’s a brave statement for a department that seems to do nothing but sort numbers.
Season 1 hinted that Lumon might be experimenting with resurrection, which brings Ms. Casey’s case to the fore. There is a possibility that MDR’s real work is connected to such experimentation.
4) New characters raise some questions
The trailer introduces new characters played by Gwendoline Christie and Alia Shawkat among others. Miss Huang, a child serving as a deputy manager, is another interesting addition.
The introduction of Miss Huang raises questions. Why would a child be involved in such a disturbing environment? Is she among Lumon’s experiments, too? Meanwhile, the addition of new severed employees suggests Lumon is expanding its operations.
5) The purpose of the goats
Cryptic elements of the first season, such as the goats, make an appearance in the trailer of season 2. A revamped ‘goat room’ indicates animals play a significant role in Lumon’s experiments.
The presence of a goat herder and a black goat costume suggests experiments at Lumon could involve rituals, possibly connected to the company’s cult-like devotion to founder Kier Eagan.
Lumon's basement remains another secret. In the trailer, an employee claims whatever happens there will be remembered as "one of the greatest moments on this planet." The statement suggests whatever is going on in the basement could have dire consequences.
Severance season 2 will air its first episode on Apple TV+ on January 17, 2025.
