Disclaimer: Major Severance Season 2 Episode 7 spoilers ahead!
The newest episode of Severance has a secret about what Gemma really does at Lumon. In Episode 7, named "Chikhai Bardo," we learn more about the strange story of her being part of the severance process. Dr. Mauer tells her something that's not true – that Mark has a new wife and kids.
But why is Mauer lying about Mark to Gemma? It's part of a bigger plan by Lumon. They want to keep her under their control in their special program.
As Gemma tries to remember who she truly is, the show looks even more into how Lumon tricks people.
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: The Wellington Room is a chamber of psychological manipulation

In Severance Season 2, each room Gemma enters tells us more about the weird experiments at Lumon. In Episode 7, she goes to the Wellington Room. This room messes with her head and helps them see how well the severance tech works.
The Wellington Room is like a mind game room. They do weird dental surgeries without her real consent and ask questions to check if she'll do as she's told. It seems like the room is supposed to wear her down and make her easier to control.
Dr. Mauer is always there during these sessions. He seems to be in charge of making sure she follows the rules and watching to see how the tech affects her. Another room called Cold Harbor (Yes, the famous one) is just as creepy and probably does similar things.
The way the story unfolds, we can see that these rooms are part of a bigger plan to control people's minds, like brain chambers. They use them to break down any resistance the workers might have. It's about keeping an eye on how the tech is working and pushing it to the limit.
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 recap: Cold Harbor is Lumon’s ultimate experiment
In Episode 7, we learn about Cold Harbor, which is a part of Lumon's shady activities. It looks like Cold Harbor is the last stop for people like Gemma.
When Drummond and Mauer talk, they hint that once Mark is done with his work there, they'll get rid of her. This makes us think that maybe Gemma is there to help Mark, and further the research behind the chips, without even knowing it.
When she asks Mauer about what's next after the rooms, he gives a weird answer:
"You will see the world again, and the world will see you."
This makes everything more mysterious. Her future at Lumon is linked to how much Mark gets done. It's a puzzle that keeps us guessing.
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: Mark and Gemma's love story
The episode titled "Chikhai Bardo" in Severance takes us back in time to show us moments from Mark and Gemma's past. We see how they met at a university blood drive and went through their struggles with not being able to have children, even a miscarriage, and rounds of what looks like IVF hormonal injections.
These flashbacks are important because they help us understand why Mark feels so sad and why he decided to get "severed" and join Lumon as an Innie after the police inform him of his wife's so-called accident.
But here's a sad twist: even though everyone thinks Gemma is dead, she's actually been living through a lot of painful experiments at Lumon. This part of their story is what makes you feel the most for the characters and shows us how much their relationship means to the show, and that Ms. Casey was an obvious front.
When Gemma finds out that Mark might still be out there in the world, she really, really wants to get out of Lumon. This turning point makes us see how important their relationship is to the story, beyond "MarkHelly" and "MarkHelena."
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 recap: Is Chikhai Bardo a metaphor for rebirth?

The episode, called "Chikhai Bardo," is about the time between dying and being reborn in Tibetan Buddhism. This fits with what's happening to Gemma. She's stuck in the dark corridors of Lumon, not knowing what's next. She can't move on because she's caught between what was and what might be.
Her big moment in this episode of Severance comes when she says no to Mauer's tricks. He tries to control her feelings, but she sees through it, and hits him with a chair, though her escape is at first, in vain. Mr. Milchik asks her to go back.
But when she opens her eyes to a really bright light at the end of the episode, it could mean she's getting closer to understanding things or finding a way out. This light might symbolize a new start or escape from Lumon.
Severance Season 2 Episode 7 Recap: Dr. Mauer is the enforcer of Lumon’s lies

Dr. Mauer plays a major antagonist in this part of the story. He represents Lumon's harsh control over workers who have had their memories divided.
His deceit isn't only about keeping Gemma calm on Severance; it's about making sure the mental boundaries Severance requires to stay strong. When he mentions how Kier can "remove pain," it shows that he truly believes in what Lumon is doing, even when Gemma fights against it.
But, he's not totally cold-hearted. Drummond hints that he might have personal feelings about what happens to Gemma. Makes sense as he tells her he loves her and even presses on her to say it back, which she does. Or has to do.
