Severance fans, hold onto your hats because Season 2 Episode 4 is gearing up to turn the show on its head. Apple TV+ has teased us with a promo that hints at a huge change in the series' setting and plot, which has everyone talking. Following the twist at the end of Episode 3, where Mark's Outie made a deal with Asal Reghabi to go through reintegration, the anticipation is at an all-time high.

The picture that's got everyone talking shows Mark, Helly, Dylan, and Irving all bundled up in big winter coats in a scene that's a far cry from the usual Lumon Industries corridors we know. This change has everyone asking: Are they actually breaking free from the Lumon compound? Or is this a new, snowy part of the company's labyrinthine setup? Most pressing of all, how is this going to affect Mark's reintegration?

Critics and cast members have hyped up Episode 4 as a game-changer.

Actor Adam Scott described it as the “most challenging” episode to film, while Collider reported that it’s:

“Radically different than anything you guys have done before.”

Grace Randolph, a well-known TV critic, even called the ending of Episode 4:

“One of the greatest scenes in television history.”

The most eye-catching part of the promotional picture, released to Vanity Fair, is the departure from the brightly lit interiors of Lumon Industries. The Macrodata Refinement group seems out and about.

Variety mentioned that the show was:

“Exploring a frigid new locale.”

This hints at a dramatic shift from what we're used to with Lumon's usual spaces.

This could mean a few different things. Maybe they have managed to break free from Lumon and are exploring the outside world. Remember, the show has a knack for playing with our heads and throwing us into unexpected places. So, it's just as likely that this new area is still part of Lumon's creation, much like the peculiar goat room we saw in the first season.

The official synopsis for Episode 4 keeps us guessing:

“The team traverses unfamiliar terrain.”

With Mark now fully reintegrated, he might be the one to take the group to explore uncharted parts of Lumon. These places could be fake-looking snowy areas that are actually part of the company, like the room with the not-so-real grass they found in the third episode. The big bosses at Lumon are mysterious, and everyone's curious about what they're really up to. This new place they go to might have all the answers they've been looking for.

Season 2 Episode 4 may change Severance forever

Critics and early opinions hint that Episode 4 of Severance could be a significant moment for the show. Severance is known for its gradual, suspenseful narrative style. However, the cast and crew have mentioned that this particular episode will bring a change we've never seen before.

Adam Scott shared that Severance creator Dan Erickson had planned for this twist from the very beginning:

“I remember very early on Dan having the idea for Episode 4 and thinking that was a fantastic idea… Once we started actually shooting it, being like, ‘Oh, okay, we’re actually going to do the thing that Dan thought of. We’re actually going to go to this place and actually do this thing.’”

Additionally, Severance might be heading for a more general shift in theme if the characters actually move out of Lumon's building. Up to now, Severance has played up the stark differences between the lives of the employees when they're in the office ("Innies") and when they're not ("Outies").

If the team from the MDR department on Severance does get away from Lumon, it could mean that those two worlds start to mix or even that the idea of cutting off people's memories like that could fall apart.

With Mark's reintegration, what he's learning could affect everyone in the company. Let's not forget the mysterious folks at the top, the Board. The third episode ended with Mrs. Cobel not wanting to talk to them, which makes us think serious fights are on inside Lumon.

Maybe the snowy place we saw is linked to what they do? Perhaps it's where they're playing with more of those memory-separation ideas? There are so many things we want answers to, and Episode 4 seems like it could be the one to finally give us some of those answers—or, like the show usually does, leave us with even more questions to chew on.

Severance Season 2 is on Apple TV+, with new episodes each Friday.
