Severance is back with its second season after a wait of almost 3 years and with each passing episode, the wait seems to be more and more worth it. Episode 4 dropped on January 7, 2025. It has created a buzz because, with this episode, everything has gone topsy turvy.
Irving’s discovery of Helly’s identity and Milchik shouting “Remove the Glasgow Block now” on his walkie-talkie has led the fans to wonder what the Glasgow Block exactly is.
Ardent followers of Severance would remember that the term Glasgow Block flashed once on screen when Dylan, in the penultimatum episode of Season 1, had activated the Overtime Contingency for Mark, Helly, and Irving.
Among a bunch of options including BEEHIVE, BRANCH TRANSFER, CLEAN SLATE, ELEPHANT, FREEZE FRAME, GOLDFISH, LULLABY, OPEN HOUSE there was also Glasgow, which Dylan had to scroll through before he could click on OVERTIME.
Let us explore what the Glasgow Block is and how it affects the Severance storyline.
Severance Season 2 Episode 4 mentions the Glasgow Block
Titled Woe’s Hollow, Severance Season 2 Episode 4 sees Mark, Irving, Dylan, and Helly go on an outside trip, which is called ORTBO (outdoor retreat and team-building occurrence), and is the first of its kind.
The team is taken to the Dieter Eagan National Forest, where they hear stories about Lumon founder Kier Eagan as they walk around in the forest.
While the trip was always meant to be a revelation, what happens could not have been anticipated by anyone. Irving realizes that Helly is actually Helena, meaning the Outie of Helly and the daughter of the Kegan family, and has been infiltrating the severance floor ever since she came back in the first episode of the second season.
This leads Irving to almost killing Helena by drowning her in the water and he demands that Milchik bring back Helly. Helena urges Milchik to do the same for the brief moment she gets to breathe, and that is when Milchik orders someone to remove the Glasgow Block.
Almost instantly Helena switches back to Helly, and appears confused as Irving hugs her. This absolutely confirms that Helena has been posing as Helly since the beginning of the second season, and she was probably planted there by the Eagans to keep an eye on the rest of the three.
What exactly is the Glasgow Block in Severance Season 2 Episode 4?
While nothing has been disclosed yet about the Glasgow Block, it is surely related to Overtime Contingency as it can switch the Innie and Outie personalities. Given the fact that Helena switched back to Helly after Milchik’s order of removing the Glasgow Block further supports this theory.
The Glasgow Block is probably used to activate the Innies only when Lumon seems fit. Therefore, it is through the Block that the authorities prevent the Innies from operating in the outside world and keep them safely apart from the Outies.
Moreover, the very name could be referring to the Glasgow coma scale, which is used as a parameter to measure the consciousness of a person after they have been through some kind of traumatic brain injury.
Considering the fact that Severance’s theme at its most basic is about dissecting the human consciousness, the name Glasgow Block makes perfect sense given the kind of operation it does.
Severance Season 1 and Episodes 1-4 of Season 2 can be streamed on Apple TV+. New episodes drop weekly every Friday.
