The Cold Harbor is a mysterious door on the testing floor of the company, and by the finale, we get to know what is behind the door. However, in Severance Season 2, the Cold Harbor revelation, which is a pivotal moment in the story, is subtly foreshadowed in the season's Episode 7, before it fully unfolds in the finale. Read on to know how.
What happens in Season 2 of Episode 7 that gives away the Cold Harbor suspense in Severance?
Severance offers detail, and several aligned clues. In Episode 7, Gemma, who has now transformed into a new innie after an experiment at Lumon, enters the Cold Harbor. She looks at the crib she and Mark had bought when they were expecting a child. The crib is associated with intense memories and emotions for Gemma, but she feels nothing. Lumon's head observes the test from a remote cabin, highlighting that the experiment has been a success.
In a flashback scene, we see that Mark breaking the crib when they get to know that they can never be parents. Now, this crib comes with 'cold harbor' written on it, which indicates that Lumon is going to use the crib in the Cold Harbor project. This also proves Lumon has been surveilling Gemma and Mark for long, before Gemma met with an accident and was considered dead.
This, therefore, was about preparing the lab rats for the experiment. It is evident that Gemma associated a strong emotion with the crib, as she was deeply wounded by not being able to conceive a child. The company made them go through such an experience so that they could later test if Gemma's innie would eliminate this core memory of her outie.
In Season 2 of Severance, we get a deeper look into the mysterious operations of Lumon Industries, especially through the work done by the MDR team that takes place in the Cold Harbor. The team is tasked with sorting strange groups of numbers into five distinct boxes during their workday. The markers “WO,” “DR,” “FC,” and “MA” stand for the Four Tempers of the human soul. This suggests that Lumon is trying to have more control over humans, their memories and even their psychological makeup.
The finale, Episode 10, titled Cold Harbor, was released on March 20, 2025, in the US and a day later internationally.
