Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's The Studio has been one of the most popular television shows right now and needless to say, the show is full of star studded portrayals and cameos.
The satirical comedy that attempts to get a few laughs out of a fictitious version of Hollywood, saw Martin Scorsese in the very opening episode, making its way to episodes where stars like Sarah Polley, Anthony Mackie and Dave Franco made appearances. Among others, Rogen and Goldberg opened up on who their favorite was, and how they made the choice to star the people that did make an appearance.
Talking on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Rogen said,
“Not only are they famous people, but the role they occupy in Hollywood is very specific for each person. We didn’t want the audience to have to suspend any disbelief when it came to who is famous and who a studio would be excited about working with. Who would you bend over backwards to work with, and who would you be afraid of? Who would you want to like you?”
The showrunners then added how they wanted Parker Finn, the director of Smile on board for one of the episodes as Rogen added,
“There’s him and no one else. We needed the director of a horror franchise that is replicable in another, shittier way. And we were like, who does ‘Smile?’ Parker Finn! We thought, ‘M3GAN,’ maybe, but it’s not quite the same thing. What we liked about ‘Smile’ is that he kept doing them. If Parker Finn had said no, I don’t know what we would have done. But that happened a lot — there were a lot of people who, if they said no, we’d have to reimagine the whole episode to some degree.”
What is The Studio about?
Directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the show is a humorous take on the celebrity culture and Hollywood studios as it centres on Rogen's character Matt Remick as the recently hired head of Continental Studios. Remick and his executive team must balance business obligations with artistic aspirations in an effort to keep movies alive and relevant. They are desperate for celebrity acceptance.
The show features some of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but the main cast consists of Seth Rogen as Matt Remick, Catherine O'Hara as Patty Leigh, Ike Barinholtz as Sal Saperstein, Kathryn Hahn as Maya Mason, and Chase Sui Wonders as Quinn Hackett.
Talking about how they got almost everyone they wanted on the show, Evan Goldberg added,
“The only people we didn’t get were [due to] a couple scheduling issues, and then there were two people who just fundamentally were not interested in playing themselves,”
The Studio is available to stream on Apple TV.
