Episode 3 of School Spirits Season 2 takes a deeper dive into the mystery surrounding Maddie’s disappearance. The episode starts with the gang investigating the Hamilton house, which was burned down in the previous episode.
They don’t know if Maddie survived the fire or if she was caught in the flames. Meanwhile, Rhonda’s past comes into focus, hinting that she might be moving on soon.
The gang heads to the Hamilton home, hoping to find any sign of Maddie. The fire is out, but they still don’t know if she made it out alive. While searching, they realize they are no closer to finding the truth.
Meanwhile, Janet is trying to stay hidden. She goes to a grocery store to buy supplies but accidentally leaves her bag in the restroom. When she returns, it’s gone. She sees two college students loading groceries into their car and suspects they have her bag. She approaches them, but it turns out to be a misunderstanding.
The students assume Janet is from their college and offer her a ride back to campus. At first, she refuses, but when she sees a store employee making a phone call, she panics. Thinking he might be calling the police, she decides to accept the ride.
Maddie and the Ghosts solve the mystery
At Split River High, Maddie and the other teen ghosts discuss what they know about Janet and Mr. Martin. They figure out that the two were working together on crossing over but don’t understand why they were keeping personal belongings and documenting their traumas. They suspect these "death items" have a deeper meaning.
Nicole and Xavier unknowingly talk to each other on a paranormal discussion board using anonymous usernames. Meanwhile, Nicole’s brother, Diego, enters the room, and there’s a hint of chemistry between him and Claire.
At school, Xavier asks Simon to pass a message to Maddie, but Simon refuses. He doesn’t want to tell her the bad news about Janet. Instead, he avoids her altogether.
Meanwhile, Maddie’s mom, Sandra, attends a support group but leaves when Mr. Anderson arrives. He follows her outside, and they talk. Sandra plans to visit a river where a body was found, hoping it’s Maddie. Mr. Anderson warns her that constantly searching for Maddie’s body will take a toll on her mental health.
Janet reaches Western Wisconsin University, where the two students invite her to a party. She doesn’t commit but starts exploring the campus. During her walk, she unknowingly passes by Diego. He is shocked, thinking he just saw Maddie.
Back at school, Nicole gets a text from Diego, saying he might have seen Maddie. She shows it to Simon, who avoids giving her any information about Janet. Maddie overhears the conversation and storms off.
Simon, Nicole, Claire, and Xavier head to Western Wisconsin University, showing students a photo of Maddie and asking if anyone has seen her. Nobody responds. Later, Claire finds a recent picture on social media where Maddie/Janet is visible in the background.
Realizing the location, they rush to a dorm party to find her. Inside, Janet tries to leave after stealing clothes and a bag, but one of the college students stops her. Nicole sees them arguing, but before she can interfere, police sirens sound, causing chaos at the party.
Rhonda walks through the school halls, holding her college acceptance letter, her death item. She stops outside the old guidance counselor’s office, where she was murdered.
Suddenly, a glowing red light appears under the door. She enters and relives her death but runs out before the memory fully plays out. When she tries to re-enter, the red light appears again. What does this mean?
Maddie finds Janet’s death item
Maddie, Charley, and Wally discuss the new details they’ve uncovered. Maddie realizes that the watch Mr. Martin gave Janet on her birthday is Janet’s death item.
Meanwhile, outside the party, Claire talks to Diego and sees Janet approaching. Since Claire doesn’t know about the body swap, she assumes it's Maddie and tells her she can come home. Janet is shocked. Nicole and Xavier arrive with a drunk Simon, giving Janet the perfect chance to escape.
After leaving the party, Simon and Xavier have a heart-to-heart conversation. Xavier promises to help Simon break the news to Maddie about losing Janet.
Then Sandra arrives home and notices someone standing nearby. It’s Janet. But since Sandra doesn’t know the truth, she calls out, “Maddie?” Janet replies, “Hi, Mom.” Overcome with emotion, Sandra rushes to hug her daughter, unaware that Maddie is still trapped.
This episode was packed with twists and emotional moments. Janet’s unexpected return to Sandra raises many questions. Is she pretending to be Maddie to manipulate her mom? Will Claire and the others figure out the truth? And what is the significance of the red light Rhonda saw?
One thing is certain, things are only getting more intense in School Spirits Season 2.
