School Spirits: Every character's death, explored

The supernatural teen drama, School Spirits, released the first three episodes of Season 2 on January 30, 2025, on Paramount+ and has dropped six episodes in all so far. Based on the upcoming graphic novel by Maria Nguyen and showrunners Megan and Nate Trinrud, the show follows Peyton List’s Maddie who has mysteriously entered the afterlife and is looking for answers on how she got stuck in the spirit world of her school, Split River High School, in Wisconsin.

As Maddie hunts for answers, she is joined by her friends from the real world and the school's spirit world. Apart from Maddie, several other teens from different time periods are also stuck in the afterlife.

Let us look at all the characters from the spirit world in School Spirits, and how they had died.

Every character that died in School Spirits

1) Maddie Nears

Peyton List plays Maddie, the protagonist who mysteriously enters the spirit world in Season 1. Later, it is revealed that Maddie did not actually die but is possessed by Janet, who has taken over Maddie's body. In doing so, Janet has thrown Maddie's spirit out of her body.

In Season 2, Maddie and her friends are trying to unravel the secrets of the afterlife while also trying to get Maddie’s spirit back into her body.

2) Charley

Played by Nick Pugliese, Charley becomes the first friend that Peyton List’s Maddie makes in the spirit world. Charley had died in the 1990s, due to an allergic reaction caused by french fries cooked in peanut oil.

Charley was a closeted gay. However, his boyfriend, Emilio Figueroa, encouraged him to come out and also revealed to his parents that the two were in a relationship. This angered Charley and he broke up with Emilio. He then went to the school cafeteria to drown his feelings in french fries, leaving his EpiPen at home.

3) Everett Martin

Also known as Mr. Martin, Josh Zuckerman’s character was a chemistry teacher in Split High. He is the leader of the support group in the spirit world. Martin tells the teens of the spirit world that he died during a fire in the chemistry lab in 1958, caused by a student.

However, the group later finds out through documented reports that he might have been the one who caused the fire that killed him and another student, Janet Hamilton.

4) Janet Hamilton

Jess Gabor’s character, Janet Hamilton died in 1958 in the chemistry lab fire, along with Mr. Martin. She is the one who has possessed Maddie’s body and has been living in her body, and keeping it away from the school so that Maddie doesn’t come in contact with it.

5) Rhonda Rosen

Sarah Yarkin’s Rhonda Rosen was killed by her guidance counselor, Mr. Manfredo. In the 1970s, Rhonda had just been accepted in Berkeley and wanted to share the exciting news with Mr. Manfredo.

However, she meets her tragic fate when she rejects Mr. Manfredo, who thought they were more than just friends. Rhonda reveals that Mr. Manfredo killed her with his bare hands. Due to this, Yarkin’s Rhonda has trust issues and doesn’t appear to be friendly with anyone. However, she later starts to break out of her shell and becomes one of Maddie’s friends in the spirit world.

6) Yuri

The death of Yuri ( Miles Elliott) is still a mystery in School Spirits. Initially, he is thought of as being stuck in a loop of making pottery. He can only speak Russian.

However, in Season 2 it is revealed that he can speak in English and might have died in the Greenhouse, according to Mr. Martin’s map. However, how he died is not revealed yet.

7) Wally Clark

Milo Manheim’s character, Wally Clark died in an accident during a football game in the 1980s. He was a popular football player and was passionate about football.

However, the game he loved also became the cause of his death when his neck was broken in a tackle during a football match. In the spirit world, Wally becomes Maddie’s love interest.

8) Dawn

Dawn, played by RaeAnne Boon, died in the 1970s due to electrocution.

RaeAnne’s Dawn was in the storeroom when she heard her friends mocking her. She accidentally spills water on an electric socket, which makes the bulb flicker. She then reaches to fix the bulb so as to not get discovered by her friends, and gets electrocuted.

9) Quinn

Ci Hang Ma’s character Quinn was a member of the marching band that was in a terrible accident when their Bus slipped on ice in 2004.

Quinn, with several of her other bandmates, is stuck in a loop for more than a decade, until Yarkin’s Rhonda’s yells to wake her up.

10) Mina

Zoe Christies’s Mina died in the late 1980s when a stage light fell on her. Since then she has been making sure that everything around the stage is perfectly intact and no other student dies like her.
