After being canceled twice, S.W.A.T. was renewed for season 8, which is also its final season. Since its debut in 2017, S.W.A.T. has centered around Shemar Moore as Sgt. Hondo, a dedicated S.W.A.T. team leader who often gets torn between protecting his own community and his duties as a law enforcer.
CBS had canceled S.W.A.T. once after season 6, but then a shortened season 7 was approved. The show then again ran the risk of cancellation. Fortunately, it was greenlit for its last season.
Amy Reisenbach, the President of CBS Entertainment, said,
“Here at CBS, we always 'stay liquid' and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of S.W.A.T.!,”
She further added,
"The show continues to resonate with viewers thanks to our talented cast led by Shemar Moore and our amazing writers and producers who keep the show relevant and action-packed.”
Let us look at all we know about S.W.A.T. Season 8 so far.
S.W.A.T. Season 8 release date
S.W.A.T. Season 8 will premiere on CBS on October 18, 2024. New episodes will air every Friday. The season will have 22 episodes. During the fall, it will air during the time slot 8 PM ET/PT, and at midseason, it will move to 10 PM ET/PT.
S.W.A.T. Season 8 plot
The final season of S.W.A.T. will see the return of Shemar Moore as Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson, a S.W.A.T. sergeant born and raised in LA. He is the leader of the elite tactical team that serves as the last stop in the LA law enforcement department.
The official synopsis mentions,
“Torn between loyalty to the community where he was raised and his brothers in blue, Hondo works to bridge the divide between his two worlds as he grapples with new parenthood alongside his wife Nichelle.”
The rest of the squad members include David 'Deacon' Kay, an experienced officer and a dedicated family man; Zoe Powell, a newcomer trying to find her place in the team; Victor Tan, a member looking for a leadership role within the team; and Commander Robert Hicks, who oversees the whole team of Metro S.W.A.T.
While the new season of S.W.A.T. might introduce some new twists, it is expected that the procedural will follow its episodic formula. The one case-per-week format is therefore very likely to continue.
However, there are some threads from season 7 that can be addressed in this season. For instance, the departure of Luca might lead to the addition of a new member on the team, and Powell is most likely to still process the near-death experience that she had in season 7.
Moreover, with Nichelle’s shortened role, it remains to be seen whether her reduced position will be addressed in season 8 or if she will simply not appear in certain episodes.
