In the latest episode of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17, which was released on January 24 on MTV, another queen was eliminated. After a remarkable lineup of blasts from the past, the queens were graded on their runway talent, their characterization of the "iconic moment from drag race herstory," and their stage presence.
While some climbed the top positions, the two weakest of all faced the lip-sync battle to grab a spot back in the show. After an extensive runway performance that included some distinguished performances from the past season, such as "No Class," "No Manners," "Backrolls," "Put Your Lighters Up," "Unprofessional," and many more,
Joella, the queen from Los Angeles, failed to impress RuPaul, Michelle Visage, and guest judge Julia Schlaepfer with her performance of "We Write the Stories," which referenced Mariah Paris Balenciaga’s monologue from Season 3. Another queen in the bottom two, Kori King, performed "Glamazon Bitch," referencing Kennedy Davenport’s talk about herself from Season 7.
Jeolla and Kori King then headed for a lip-sync battle on "Buttons" by the Pussycat Dolls.
Joella bids farewell to Season 17 of RuPaul's Drag Race in Episode 4 of the show
Even after literally converting herself into a mattress, the Californian queen Joella could not save herself from coming to the bottom two during Episode 4 of RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17. For the runway challenge, the queens had to perform on the theme of "Quilted for Your Pleasure" which had an additional twist of recreating a version of memorable performances by the previous queens on the show.
The toss was based on the representation of an authentic, powerful, and creative visualization, portraying all of these through a video created and directed by the queens themselves. The judges for this week were the main chairs, RuPaul and Michelle Visage, accompanied by Carson Kressley and 1923 actress Julia Schlaepfer.
As the runway challenge ended, Crystal, Suzie, and Onya were the top favorites of RuPaul's Drag Race judges. The judges were impressed by their "Quilt" and stage presence. After the final verdict came, Onya Nerve won the victory title as the runaway winner. On the other hand, Kori and Joella were put in the Lip-Sync for Your Life battle, where they had one more chance to redeem themselves and get back into the game.
The queens had to perform on "Buttons" by Pussycats Dolls ft. Snoop Dogg. After losing to Kori King in the lip-sync battle, Joella was given a lifeline in the form of the new twist brought by RuPaul this season, "Badonka Tank." For those who are unversed, Bandoka Tank is an immunity opportunity that allows the eliminated queen to their luck to be in the game for one more week.
Yes, it is based entirely on luck. There is no talent involved. The show had set up a "Badonka Dunk Tank," atop which sits the leading judge, Michelle Visage. The queen has to pull a lever from number 1 to 10, and two of the levers have the ability to send Vusag down in the dunk. If the queen pulls the correct lever, Visage gets dunked, but the queen gets to stay afloat in the game.
However, it seemed, it was not a good day altogether for RuPaul's Drag Race queen Jeolla, as she pulled lever number 6, which did nothing for her but send her packing back home.
RuPaul's Drag Race Season 17 premiered on January 3, 2025 on MTV. Tune into MTV on Fridays to watch the new episode.
