USA Network's popular medical dramedy series Royal Pains is coming back after almost a decade, not with a new season but a fresh reboot/sequel. As per a report by Deadline, NBC has decided to develop a sequel/reboot of the Mark Feuerstein-starring series Royal Pains.
Created by the duo Andrew Lenchewski and John P. Rogers, Royal Pains premiered on June 4, 2009, and ran for eight successful seasons. The series came to an end in 2016. It follows Dr. Hank Lawson, a disgraced ER doctor who became a concierge physician for the rich in the Hamptons. With his brother Evan and PA Divya, he built the HankMed treating bizarre cases (from polo injuries to Botox disasters).
This popular blue sky comedy-drama isn't like the usual medical procedural shows. It includes humor, medical mysteries, family drama, romance, and more. The vibe of the show? Imagine if Grey's Anatomy meets Curb Your Enthusiasm but in the Hamptons.
Here's what we know about the upcoming sequel of Royal Pains on NBC.
What is the plot of the Royal Pains reboot on NBC?
The NBC reboot will follow the aftermath of the finale episode of USA Network's Royal Pains but with a seven-year leap. As per Deadline, the plot of the Royal Pains reboot on NBC will be based on the context,
" Dr. Hank Lawson is searching for a new purpose in life and is about to embark on his biggest project yet."
The series finale of Royal Pains saw Dr. Hank choosing to reunite with Jill in Sierra Leone, Africa while promising to maintain his ties to the Hamptons. A three-year flash forward revealed Hank and Jill are engaged, and as per their promise, they returned to the Hamptons for a brief summer vacation. Evan and Paige, now parents to twins and having fostered three orphans(Lena, Wes, and Ian), moved to Boris' estate. While Boris, who was revealed as some Russian royalty, decided to decline leadership and leave the country. Meanwhile, Divya kept her promise and returned to HankMed after her medical school at Johns Hopkins. Thus, HankMed continued under Evan, Jeremiah, and Divya's leadership.
However, due to a seven-year leap in NBC's Royal Pains reboot, there might be a strikingly different plotline that would place the lead, Dr. Hank, in a different location with new opportunities and challenges.
Who's in Royal Pains' reboot on NBC?
The cast for the reboot/sequel of Royal Pains has not been revealed by NBC yet. Deadline reported that only Mark Feuerstein will reprise his role as Dr. Hank Lawson from the series. Except for Feuerstein, the series will feature new faces. However, viewers can expect some cameo/guest roles of a few characters from Royal Pains.
Apart from Mark Feuerstein, the incredible cast of Royal Pains included Paulo Costanzo as Evan R. Lawrence, Reshma Shetty as Divya, Ben Shenkman as Dr. Jeremiah, Jill Flint as Jill Casey, Campbell Scott as Boris, and Brooke D'Orsay as Paige Collins, to name a few.
Apart from that, Royal Pains creator Andrew Lenchewski and producer Michael Rauch will join as writers for the reboot series. The EPs for the upcoming show include Mark Feuerstein, Andrew Lenchewski, Rich Frank, and Michael Rauch. Along with that, Raunch will reprise his role as a director; previously, he directed almost 12 episodes for the original series.
