The big finale of Reacher Season 3 is only hours away, and excitement among fans is skyrocketing. With loads of questions and a bunch of expectations, viewers are holding their fingers crossed - will Reacher be able to catch Quinn? Will he be able to rescue Teresa? Will that Reacher v/s Paulie face-off finally happen?
All these answers lie in the much-anticipated Episode 8, and the fate of key characters like Susan, Villanueva, Zachary, and Richard Beck is also something the fans are worried about. It has been a rocky road till now as Lee Child's titular hero makes his way to Zachary's mansion in Episode 7, trying stop Quinn's big deal with the Yemenis.
The whole of it starts with a fake kidnapping staged by Reacher and his DEA associates as the former eventually tries to find a way into Zachary Beck's secret operations. With a long-rooted enemy like Quinn's name coming up in the picture, Reacher gets hell bent to catch the ex-military turned gun smuggler (owing to a personal loss from years back). So, now let's have a look at how we reached where we are right now with Reacher Season 3.
It all started with a fake kidnapping in the Reacher Season 3 pilot
Reacher Season 3, Episode 1 begins in Abbottsville, Maine, where we see a young boy getting almost kidnapped. However, Reacher (who was also present at the scene, selling old records at a music shop) intervenes at the right time and saves the boy's life.
But things get ugly as the cop accidentally gets killed at Reacher's hands during the encounter, and Reacher and the kid (named Richard Beck) flee the scene. Reacher soon learns that Richard is the son of a highly influential and rich rug merchant, Zachary Beck (owner of Bizarre Bazaar).
At Richard's request, Reacher takes him back home, and the former promises him protection - thanks to his father's impactful connections. It is not until later in the episode that it is revealed that all of this was staged by Reacher and Agent Duffy (along with their DEA friends) so that our titular hero can infiltrate an infamous rug business in Maine, which is just the face of something illegal and really dangerous involving a drug operation.
Season 3 brings around someone who can easily outmatch Reacher
Paulie, aka Paul Van Hoven (played by Olivier Richters), is one of the most formidable characters introduced by Reacher in Season 3. He is portrayed as rug merchant Zachary's bodyguard and is well-known for his muscular and tall stature - not to mention his fierce approach.
Paulie's intimidating presence even makes our titular hero look insignificant, but from the pilot episode itself, Reacher has proved that he can outsmart Paulie. In Episode 3, we also see Reacher using his wit to knock Paulie down in a round of Bavarian Arm Wrestling - yet another instance where his presence of mind gave him the advantage.
However, in one of the latter episodes, we do see Paulie almost knock Reacher out with one punch, and that is what scares the fan. Will Reacher be able to beat him in the finale? How will Reacher handle that one-sided face-off? The wait is not yet over.
An old enemy resurfaces, and Reacher takes a vow to avenge an old friend's death
Yes, we are talking about Xavier Quinn. He is an ex-military man who has had a notorious record over time and almost got killed at the hands of Reacher during an operation years back. However, Reacher suffered a huge loss during the strike, Major Dominique Kohl - a bright young officer who served under Reacher's command at the time of Quinn's operation.
But one small decision on Reacher's led to her tragic fate at the hands of Xavier Quinn. All he wanted was for her to take the credit for the good work she had done until things went sideways, and she got killed brutally.
Reacher, after realizing that something might have gone wrong, made it just in time to catch Quinn. He shot him in the head, but cold water and a bullet of undesirable size saved Quinn's life. But now he is back and in some way or the other is related to Zachary Beck's illegal business. Or is he the head of all of it himself? Let's find out.
Reacher is smart (& it outweighs his strength in Season 3)
The way Reacher infiltrates Zachary Beck's mansion, takes care of the men guarding him, and earns the position of head of security so soon is commendable. It also proves how smart he is when in an undercover operation, and his presence of mind is something that saves him time and again.
When Angel Doll (a man who works for Beck) almost catches Reacher with his fake identity and staged kidnapping of Richard Beck (in Episode 2), Reacher kills him and sets up another story. He makes it look like (to Beck) Doll has been backstabbing Zachary - yet another smart move.
Soon after, he also wipes out Chapman Duke (another recruit of Beck or rather Xavie Quinn) from the picture and earns Beck's trust. Meanwhile, Reacher and Susan's investigation comes with a major reveal - Quinn is the heart of the whole operation. He is probably involved in a gun deal with foreign buyers, and the transaction will take place inside the country - Beck is just the frontman of his dirty deeds.
Two undeserving deaths and one life still at stake
Agent Steve Eliot tragically dies while being involved in Reacher's undercover operation, and his end seemed quite undeserving. Eliot was holding Richard's bodyguard captive and keeping an eye on him when one small mistake on his part landed him in trouble.
On the other hand, an undercover ATF agent (who worked as a maid for Beck) gets killed at the hands of Paulie after Quinn orders Beck to search all his staff. This culminates after Quinn gets to learns that someone (Reacher) is tailing his activities, and he becomes extra cautious.
Another prominent name, Teresa, floats throughout Season 3 until her first appearance in the seventh episode takes us by surprise. She is an agent recruited by Susan to work on the case, but ever since Teresa got in, Agent Duffy has not been in touch with her, thus anticipating that she's in danger. From what we know now, Teresa is being held captive by Quinn (aka Julius McCabe) himself (under the influence of substances).
Reacher almost gets his cover blown
Though Richard comes to know about Reacher's cover, he is partially kept in the dark about what is actually going on. Moreover, Reacher also makes a costly mistake of hiding Duffy's DEA batch in his bedroom back in Beck's house, and that almost gets his cover blown, but it's just for the time being.
Neagley is back to her usual self, and Reacher is now with the ATF; Beck helps
Given the fact that a Reacher spin-off titled Neagley is already underway, Frances Neagley's return to the third season was much expected. We even see her trying to help Reacher initially, but he does not want her to get in trouble because of him.
It is not until Episode 7 that we have her back. Neagley's on-screen presence is just the same or maybe even better this time - quite a teaser for her own show! On the other hand, Susan manages to get Reacher on board with the ATF after quite some persuasion (as they would need backup to break apart Quinn's heavily-guarded operation).
The showdown
Quinn eventually learns about Reacher's true intentions (though he was not able to recognize him on the first encounter). He presses Beck and tortures him, trying to make sure that he has not sided with Reacher.
But the game's gone all wrong as Beck helps Reacher and spills the beans on where the deal would take place. Quinn is, however, no less smart and guesses something might go wrong.
So, he changes the location of the deal last moment and sets a trap for Reacher and the ATF - good thing that Neagley has been tailing the buyers since they landed on the private airstrip. The final moments of Episode 7 show Reacher having an intense exchange of words with Agent Duffy (his new love interest), who then asks him not to go on field.
But Reacher, being his usual self, takes up a gun and goes out on a watch at the Bullhead Salvage Yard (where, according to Beck, the deal is supposed to take place). To much surprise of the fans, it was a trick on Quinn's part, and the deal would now take place right inside Beck's mansion, at the time of his birthday. Will Reacher be able to stop it? Or will things go sideways? All we can do now is wait for the much-anticipated finale.
