As Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 comes to an end, Will makes an important decision about his life. He's moving to causing a significant shift in his relationship with Em. While he lets her know about his choice, Will doesn't confirm his plans to return.

This way, the duo's future is left uncertain in the Season 1 finale as the creators aim to expand their story.

Creator Matt Kester said:

"We didn’t want to completely put them together at the end because we felt that was too neat of a package. We wanted to allow them to stew in what they’ve done."

He continued:

"He needed to be punished for his bad behavior. But there’s still this definite love and affection between them that we can play in hopefully a Season 2. We’ve got some great plans, hopefully, upcoming to what’s going to happen with that romantic relationship."

Kester said that Will must suffer a punishment for his errors, but his relationship with Em hasn't come to an end either. The conclusion was meant to make the audience realize how much the characters love one another.

Em gets a job offer, which will be a stepping stone towards financial independence and security. By keeping away from Will, she will also be free to concentrate on herself.
