Although Mark's journey back into the fold looked hopeful at the start of Severance Season 2, it ended up going nowhere, which makes you wonder if Reghabi's method is all it's cracked up to be. Reintegration has been the holy grail—a way to bring back a severed person's work and home selves into one whole person. However, Reghabi's track record isn't exactly spotless.
Despite her claims to know what she's doing, she couldn't pull it off with either Petey or Mark. Petey's death in the first season was a red flag about reintegration. Reghabi chalked it up to him not following the rules, but it still left a bad taste.
Then, Mark goes through this near-death scare in Severance Season 2, and it's like a punch to the gut for our belief in the process. His work self isn't even sure it's a good idea anymore. This makes you ask: does Reghabi have a handle on her creation, or is she just throwing darts in the dark?
Maybe reintegration is more problematic than we thought, or maybe her way of doing it isn't the ticket. With these setbacks, you can't help but question if the whole idea is flawed at its core or if she's not the right person to make it work.
Reghabi failed to reintegrate Mark & Petey
Reghabi’s reintegration efforts haven’t had a clear-cut successful outcome yet.
Petey's end could have served as a warning sign, but she didn’t let that deter her. Reghabi carried on her experiments with Mark, keeping his hope alive by pointing out that his wife, Gemma, survived a similar situation.
However, when she attempted to speed up Mark’s progress by overloading his chip, things took a dangerous turn. Instead of achieving the desired result, it almost cost him his life and left Severance fans reeling.
Rather than fusing, Mark's innie and outie were kept separate, with little progress toward complete fusion. Fans claim that reintegration does not eliminate the outie or the innie as much as it forms an entirely new, mixed consciousness.
Nevertheless, the psychological impact is still dire—Mark's outie is now tainted by his innie's experiences, so reintegration is hardly a smooth transition. If the process merely forms a completely different identity, then neither the innie nor the outie survives as they initially were.
Cobel might reintegrate Mark in Severance Season 3
While Reghabi’s attempts have been unsuccessful, there is reason to believe that Cobel may hold the key to true reintegration. Having been instrumental in developing the severance procedure, Cobel possesses deeper knowledge of its mechanics than Reghabi.
Unlike Reghabi, who largely operates in the dark, Cobel insisted that reintegration is possible. Throughout Severance Season 2, Cobel’s shifting allegiances suggest she may be more willing to explore reintegration as a viable option.
The fact that she attempted to convince the Board in season 1 that reintegration works implies she has insider knowledge beyond what Reghabi understands. If she combines her expertise with Reghabi’s experiments, she might finally succeed where Reghabi failed.
But Harmony Cobel's motives are uncertain—does she really want to assist Mark on Severance, or does she harbor a more nefarious scheme?
With season 3 announced by Apple TV+, fans can anticipate further insight into the reintegration conundrum. Will Cobel be more successful than Reghabi? Or is reintegration a fundamentally defective process?
Fans will learn when Severance Season 3 is back only on Apple TV+.
