Craig Charles is a well-known British actor who has played many memorable roles on television. One of his longest-running roles was Lloyd Mullaney, the friendly taxi driver in the popular British soap opera Coronation Street. He was part of the show for ten years, with his final episode airing in 2015.

Another major role in his career was in the 1992 BBC horror mockumentary, Ghostwatch. This unique program tricked many viewers into thinking it was a real live broadcast. Charles played himself, adding to the illusion. The show became infamous for how convincingly it spooked the audience.

Recently, Charles shared some news about Red Dwarf Season 13, a much-anticipated installment of the beloved sci-fi comedy. However, it seems the new season might not go ahead as planned.

Craig Charles on Red Dwarf Season 13’s future

Speaking to RadioTimes, Charles revealed that the planned three-episode season, originally set to film in 2025, is now uncertain. He hinted that financial concerns are the main issue, making it difficult for production to move forward.

He explained:

"I’m not sure that it will come back, to be honest. I know that the deal that we had to make it this year looks like that might not be happening now. I can't really say any more on that because I don't know much more, but I just know that there have been lots of conversations about cost, and I think [the episodes] might be too expensive."

While Charles emphasized that the cast and crew want to continue the show, the financial challenges make things uncertain. He also pointed out that the TV industry in the UK is facing serious difficulties.

The UK film and TV industry has been struggling with:

  • Funding issues – Many broadcasters, including the BBC and Channel 4, are facing budget cuts.
  • Streaming competition – More viewers are switching to online platforms, reducing traditional TV revenue.
  • Rising production costs – Making high-quality shows has become more expensive.
  • Fewer opportunities for independent productions – Smaller companies are struggling to survive.

These factors have affected many TV projects, including Red Dwarf. While the show has a loyal fanbase, financial constraints might delay or even cancel the new season.

Despite the challenges, Craig Charles and the Red Dwarf team are not giving up. While Charles admitted that 2025 might not work out, he did not rule out a return in the future.

If the industry stabilizes, there’s a chance that the show could return when conditions improve. Fans can only hope that Red Dwarf will find a way to continue its intergalactic adventures.

While the future of Red Dwarf Season 13 is unclear, the love for the series remains strong. If funding issues are resolved, we may still see the cast back in action. Until then, fans will have to wait and see.
