Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary, in a recent interview with Fox Business, discussed his opinions about the new tariffs imposed by the US government on steel and aluminum imports from Canada. He said that the situation is unique and could give rise to a huge negotiation deal.
Explaining the same, Kevin said that the reason why America imports its aluminum from Canada is because of the power factor. The country has access to abundant and affordable energy sources such as hydroelectric and natural gas power, which are crucial for the production process of aluminum.
Fans on Twitter expressed their opinions about the entire situation and reminisced about how there were tariffs like these in the past, but they all failed. A user by the name @thescottbarber wrote,
"He imposed these same tariffs last time. It led to a short-time rise in steel and aluminum production in the US, followed by a sharp fall when they realized they couldn't bring down the price of production in order to compete globally while maintaining multiple steel and aluminum-dependent industries. They could bring the costs down but that would take years of investment, which they don't have. It's really that dumb."
Shark Tank fans react to the US tariffs against Canadian aluminum
The Shark Tank investor shared his views about tariffs and, according to fans, stated a rather "controversial" opinion about the same. He insisted on getting an "economic union."
Kevin suggested that they could join the currency of America and Canada by making it equal and become a "behemoth" that could take on China.
However, Shark Tank fans objected to the idea and said that Kevin was "misrepresenting" them. One user by the name @thedancesound said,
"I’m a Canadian citizen. If you like it so much down there, become an American and stop misrepresenting us. We don’t want to be associated with a convicted felon."
On the contrary, some users did support the views of Canada and America joining forces to become an even more powerful union. In the interview, Shark Tank's Kevin had stated that "43% of Canadians" agree with this idea, and commenting on the same, a user @deoofbract wrote,
"43% wanting closer ties? That's a significant chunk of the population. Could this be the start of a beautiful, economically powerful friendship?"
"Kevin you are the only person that I hear that makes any sense. No Canada is not the 51st state but a true economic and military alliance would make both countries invincible. A true world power alliance," said @rickmcnully
Some Shark Tank fans were very against the entire idea and claimed that Kevin was propagating the entire thing for selfish reasons. A user named @_satishiape wrote,
"So you want us to give a discount on our resources, so you rich folk can get richer, while we continually get shafted with ever-increasing taxes & you find more ways to get tax breaks? No, we want something more tangible for those resources!"
They added,
"We want to ditch citizenship of this corrupt system of governance for citizenship of the greatest constitutional republic in human history. You only think of yourself Kevin, as we know you have dual citizenship, you f*cking pr*ck!"
Shark Tank Season 16 releases new episodes weekly on ABC at 8 PM Eastern Time on Fridays. Later, they can be streamed online on Hulu.
