Reacher is currently in its third Season, and with each passing episode, it becomes more and more evident that Reacher has some kind of history with Quinn because catching him seems more than a professional commitment.
Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 finally gives some context in that regard while also giving more insight into Reacher’s past and how his one wrong call had gotten his protégé Dominique killed.
While talking about this episode and Dominique’s character in CinemaBlend, Alan Ritchson mentioned,
“That episode is the heart and soul of this entire season. If we don't understand why he wants to go after the antagonist so bad – you know, he calls [him] the most evil guy he's ever met – this is the inciting incident for that. But it also helps us understand Reacher’s values, you know, and who he works with. I mean, this is the first teammate that he's ever adopted.”
Let us now explore how Reacher’s decision to send Dominique to get Quinn ended up in a tragedy he never really recovered from.
Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 shows Dominique and Reacher’s backstory
One consistent trope that Reacher follows is that every season sees a villain that has some kind of a personal connection to Reacher. However, in season 3, that connection gets the most personal as it is gradually revealed how Quinn had caused the death of Dominique, the only person Reacher was genuinely impressed with back in his Army days.
Through flashbacks, Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 reveals how, after making a solid case against Quinn, Reacher had decided to send Dominique on her own to nab the criminal. However, this decision proved not only to be foolish but also to be extremely unfortunate because this mission killed Dominique.
Given the fact that Reacher himself showed up at Quinn’s place this time with a full backup, it is natural to question his judgment regarding what he did with Dominique. However, what should be remembered here is that Reacher did not have a complete idea of how dangerous Quinn could be, and everyone on the team, including Dominique herself, had underestimated him.
Moreover, Reacher’s decision to send Dominique alone to get Quinn was fueled by pure intentions, as he wanted to give Dominique the credit she deserved. Unfortunately, his decision completely misfired, leading to a loss and trauma that turned out to be pretty much permanent.
Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 backstory adds more layer to the story
While incorporating flashbacks is really not a new thing in Reacher, this one story stands out because of the way Dominique’s character is portrayed. Given how talented and dedicated she was, if she were not tragically killed, she could have been a very trusted sidekick of Reacher.
Moreover, her death also provides insights into Reacher’s personality and how that one incident had impacted his sense of justice and morality. Her death is undoubtedly one of the most unfortunate ones in the show till now.
Reacher can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
