Reacher, based on Lee Child’s book series, follows its source material more or less faithfully. Moreover, given the fact that each of Child’s books from the series can be read on its own, it gives the show the advantage to choose whichever book they want, without following the series chronologically.

For instance, Reacher Season 3 is based on the seventh book of the series, titled Persuader. However, it is in this season that the viewers meet General Garber, a character who was first introduced in the second book of the series, Die Trying.

Fans who have read the books would know how important Garber’s character is, as he is the main mentor of Reacher. While he is not there in every story, his character plays an extremely significant role in Reacher’s life.

Garber’s introduction in Reacher Season 3 makes complete sense because this season gives some insight into Reacher’s past, and the viewers also get introduced to another important character, Dominique.

Reacher Season 3 introduces Reacher’s mentor, General Garber

As mentioned previously, Garber is an important figure in Reacher’s life as he was his mentor. Since Reacher Season 3 Episode 4 operates on a lot of flashbacks, the viewers get a glimpse into the kind of relationship that Reacher had with Garber during his days in the Army.

It is revealed that, like the present time, Reacher preferred to operate alone back then as well. However, Garber pairs him up with Dominique, a young woman who visibly impresses Reacher with her military skills.

Throughout the episode, Reacher and Dominique build a relationship of professional admiration and respect. If looked closely, one would understand that they have this mentor-mentee bond, which is what Reacher shares with Garber. As Garber is senior to Reacher, so is Reacher to Dominique, and their bonds portray similar kinds of dynamics.

Garber’s character is also shown to be a caring individual who believes in genuinely respecting and caring for his team members. This becomes even more apparent when it is revealed that Quinn has gotten hold of Dominique, who went to catch the criminal alone, as Reacher suggested.

In the books Garber passes away before the third book of the Reacher series

What is interesting here is that according to Lee Child’s novels, Garber’s character breathes his last before Tripwire, the third book of the series. However, viewers get to see him in a season that is based on the seventh book, and that is why the character comes during flashbacks.

This means that there is a lot of space in the show for exploring Garber and Reacher’s bond.

It is also established that Garber is a huge influence in Reacher’s life, and the former’s calm and logical approach to any problem at hand is a guiding principle that Reacher follows whenever he finds himself distracted.

Therefore, while the possibility of exploring the dynamic between Reacher and his mentor Garber remains open, it can only be done to its full potential if the show adapts a book where he is still alive.

Otherwise, it would be only through flashbacks that the viewers would be able to know more about Garber and how he influenced and taught Reacher.

Reacher can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
