Reacher Season 3 Episode 1 ends with a big twist when it is learned that the entire kidnapping of Richard Beck (Zachary Beck's son) had been staged by Reacher and his DEA associates, Susan Duffy, Guillermo Villanueva, and Steven Elliot. It was a master plan from Reacher to infiltrate Beck's illegal business operations—especially hoping to connect the dots to Quinn.
However, the planning looked rock solid until a small mistake on their part brought trouble when Zachary's men got a trace of the pickup truck used while staging the kidnapping. Coincidentally, Reacher's federal buddies had sent both the cars involved in the incident to the same state evidence lot in Maine.
Worried by the fact that Zachary's hired man, Angel Doll, will find the bodyguard's vehicle there with no trace of blood inside (given the fact that a bomb went off), Reacher contacts Susan. The latter, just in time, manages to reach the police impound lot and switch the plates of the black Audi with that of some other car and saves the day.
How did Susan fool Zachary's hired guy in the state evidence lot on Reacher Season 3 Episode 2?
As seen in Reacher Season 3 Episode 2, Reacher narrowly escapes being caught and gets back to Zachary Beck's mansion. Soon after, Chapman Duke(the right hand of Beck) comes to his room and asks him to accompany one of their men, Angel Doll on a night errand.
Reacher soon learns that Zachary's men have been able to track down the vehicle used to kidnap (or stage the kidnapping of) Richard Beck in a police impound lot about 90 miles away. But, Reacher being his usual smart and stay-one-step ahead self, understands the gravity of the situation.
He gets on a call with Susan Duffy using his secret cell and informs her of the crucial development in their highly-planned undercover operation. The two of them soon realize that both the cars at the scene of the kidnapping are now being kept at Maine's state evidence lot—confiscated by the government as contraband.
To give context, during the kidnapping, Reacher and his federal associates used a fake bomb to blow the insides of the car to make the whole thing real. But there should ideally be some evidence left like the blood of the bodyguard who was chauffeuring Richard.
A clean Audi with only external damage would raise suspicion. So, Susan reaches the evidence lot beforehand and asks Reacher to delay their transit as much as possible.
When Angel Doll and Reacher appear at the police impound lot, the former spots the black car that was carrying Richard during the time of the attack. He senses something fishy on noticing the same kind of damage to the car (as explained by Richard). Angel, quite surprised by the direct resemblance of the vehicle and the damage, mentions:
"It's the same exact make and model, even all f**ked up in the side. It's like that car hit this car."
On top of that, a different number plate leaves him even more confused as he says to Reacher:
"Doesn't make any sense."
Reacher tries to cool down the situation by saying that the actual car is probably being held at a temperature-controlled evidence lot so that DNA imprints can be retained. Right at that moment, we see Susan's hands reaching out from below the car for a screwdriver lying outside.
Reacher immediately spots it and pushes the tool towards her with his foot. Angell Doll is thus fooled by Susan who had clearly reached the evidence lot much before them and switched the plates of the damaged vehicle with some other car coming from Delaware.
