Apart from giving a great history lesson and epic gang fights, BBC's crime drama, Peaky Blinders, also gave its fans a memorable character in Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby, who is a masterclass in confidence.

While the Blinders are a group to be feared, Tommy's unmatched wit and presence prove why they were the leading criminal gang in 1920s Birmingham.

Tommy Shelby's confidence was on full display during many sequences, but this key scene in Season 2 Episode 3, where he meets May Carleton for the first time, stands out.

May, a wealthy widow and a horse trainer, meet Tommy for the first time at an auction house. When she asks him "what he does," he says:

''I rarely answer questions, is what I do"

The reply, albeit simple yet assertive, proves that nobody can question the Shelby leader, and Tommy asserts his superiority in every room he walks in.

More on Tommy's confidence and this key scene from Peaky Blinders Season 2 in our story.

Tommy Shelby: The confident gang leader of Peaky Blinders

While Peaky Blinders' sharp appearance and charm shine through the show's six seasons, it is their gang leader, Tommy's confidence and aura that takes the limelight.

There are several instances where Tommy Shelby asserts his dominance and exuberates confidence in every room he walks in, but this particular scene in Season 2, Episode 3, signifies the ruthless gangster's charm and aura.

While Tommy's answer might seem impolite to many, his receiver here (May Carleton) cannot help but bask in his charming aura. This key scene also marks Tommy's first meeting with May, who will later become one of his love interests, and Grace's competition in Season 2.

Tommy goes to an auction house with his brothers, where May is also present. When she introduces herself and asks what he does, Tommy gives this befitting reply, establishing the character's aversion to socializing. Tommy Shelby is not here to make friends and acquaintances, and his line of work has made him weary of people, thus the sass he portrays here.

By giving this witty reply, Tommy asserts his dominance over May, but his reserved and stoic expressions also give him a gentleman's confidence, which is hard to ignore. He once again proves why he is the group's leader and the reason behind the gang's multiple triumphs—his unmatched confidence.

Tommy Shelby's confidence in Peaky Blinders: A hit among the women in his life

While Tommy Shelby's confidence is a testament to the gang's victory in every field, his self-assurance is also a hit among the ladies and often wins him the affection of many women.

Grace was Tommy's only true love in Peaky Blinders, and he never really moved on from her death in Season 3. However, he had brief encounters with multiple women, one of them being May Carleton.

While she is wealthy and unbounded by obligations due to her status as a widow, she cannot help but be drawn to Tommy's dominance and the majestic aura he portrays everywhere. Where many would have disliked Tommy's smugness over such a reply, May gets impressed, and it also marks the start of their relationship.

She wants to know the majestic leader more and offers to train his newest horse, Grace's Secret. During this training, the two get close, and Tommy even spends many nights at her mansion.

While Grace saw the softer side of Tommy, May was attracted to his gangster and dominant nature, which he displayed in full during their first conversation. This also separates May from Grace, who is more attracted to Tommy's power and superiority and even promises to win him from Grace.
