Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone focuses on the Dutton family and its many members, as each of them is driven by their own ambition and passion to get hold of the ranch.
Running for five seasons, Yellowstone has established each character with dynamic storylines. However, the characteristics of most of the characters remain the same throughout the story.
Most of the Yellowstone characters are neither downright good nor bad. Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) character is, however, an exception since this member of the Dutton family is disliked by all and everyone.
On the other hand, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are well loved not only because of their relationship as a couple but also because of how they behave individually.
The other characters in the Yellowstone universe, like Carter (Finn Little) and Tate (Breken Merril), did not have much chance to evolve, and they stand somewhere in the middle regarding their lovability and importance in the Dutton household.
Let us now rank the Duttons depending on who stands the tallest in the house.
The article is based on the author’s opinions.
Ranking the Dutton family in Yellowstone
John Dutton
While definitely a grey character, John Dutton is undoubtedly the most charming and iconic character in Yellowstone. Played by Kevin Costner, the character stands out, despite making some questionable choices about his children.
While John did create conflict among his children, he also did some good parenting as well. Moreover, the fact that he cares so much about Montana and its environment and is ready to go to war with the authorities to protect the place says a lot about him, essentially making him a favorite.
Beth Dutton
Beth Dutton, John’s only daughter, comes in second place in terms of the family ranking. While Beth’s exterior is tough and often scary, she does have a heart that’s big and warm. Her character has also been shown to undergo significant transformations, making her more likeable.
The flashbacks in Yellowstone offer more insight into Beth’s past, and that explains why she is the way she is. However, since her moments of growth are enormous in the show, she emerges nearest to John Dutton when it comes to holding a place and affection in the family.
Rip Wheeler
Beth’s husband, Rip, is a significant member of the Dutton family. Though he is not connected with the family by birth, he has been a rock-solid member of it since he arrived.
He and Beth make a great couple, and he makes sure that he proves that he always has the best intention in his heart when it comes to the Duttons. His history of trauma that he survived as an adolescent makes his character even more layered, and the fact that he has been forged into a gentleman even after the abuse he faced makes him a really well-written and lovable character.
Kayce Dutton
Right after Rip comes his brother-in-law Kayce, who has the best intentions in his heart and has sworn allegiance to his family. He is a good husband and a caring father while also being a dependable character when it comes to his family’s business and its many troubles.
In Yellowstone Season 5, Kayce’s character is shown to be more evolved than in any of the previous seasons as he swears to find his father’s killer along with Beth. A responsible gentleman, Kayce is a prominent and loving member of the Dutton household.
Monica Dutton
Kayce Dutton’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), is a Native American woman and belongs to the Broken Rock’s of the Confederated Tribes. Despite being an indigenous character who could have been really inspiring, Monica’s character has been written in a way that shows her to be too upright at times, both as the daughter-in-law of the Duttons and as a college lecturer at Montana State University.
She shames her students for not listening to her and bullies them instead of helping to make them understand what to do. However, despite her flaws, she is a reality check for the Duttons, who keep reminding them that their life of crime is not right, no matter how good they are as people.
Jamie Dutton
John Dutton’s adopted son and Beth and Kayce’s adopted brother, Jamie Dutton is probably the least likeable character in the Dutton family. Despite being adopted, his status never came in the way of him being considered as a true Dutton. However, his own ungratefulness and dubious ways are what made him seem like a lesser Dutton.
Throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone, Jamie has shown to be doing various violent and evil things to cause problems in the Dutton family. In the final season, his involvement in John Dutton’s murder nailed the last pin on his coffin, and he is now certainly the most hated Dutton in the Yellowstone universe.
Yellowstone can be streamed on Paramount Network.
