Here's what happened in Pulse Episode 1:
Danny reports Chief Resident Xander for Sexual Harassment: Pulse Episode 1
Pulse Episode 1, titled 'Abby,' began with a school bus crashing down a bridge due to strong winds and low visibility caused by Hurricane Abby. At the Maguire Medical Centre, we see that Dr. Xander Phillips was suspended due to a sexual harassment report by Dr. Danny.
Danny is woken up by her sister, Harper Simms, who motivates her to get ready for the day. Meanwhile, Danny gets flashbacks of Xander trying to kiss her. As the staff gossips about Xander and Danny, the department chair, Dr. Cruz, announces Danny's promotion to chief resident of the Maguire Medical Centre.
Immediately, Danny gets transported to a flashback memory of Xander's first day as a chief resident transferred from Kennedy Hospital. As Xander gets up with the other staff, he has his eyes fixated on Danny. Meanwhile, in the present time, Danny asks Dr. Cruz not to promote her because her allegations against Xander might look engineered.
A fatal bus crash leads to an emergency at Maguire Medical Centre: Pulse Episode 1
Danny and her team prepare as the victims of the fatal bus crash start to arrive one after the other. The bus driver and team coach, Chris Harris, was critically injured. In between the chaos, Danny again gets flashbacks of Xander operating on her patient with a dog injury. The two have a conflict over the patient's diagnosis, but they reconcile after Danny answers Xander's question correctly.
Meanwhile, Cole helps a 17-year-old critically injured patient with an amputated hand from the bus crash. The patient identifies himself as Tyler, and he worries about his missing friend, Vero Cruz. Cole realizes that Vero is Dr. Cruz's daughter and immediately informs her.
Dr. Ruben Soriano criticizes Dr. Cruz's decision to appoint Dr. Danny as the chief resident during such an emergency. He doubts Danny's leadership in the already short-staffed ER centre, stuck amidst Hurricane Abby. On the other hand, Elijah and Harper Simms share a light moment, pondering over Xander and Danny's complicated relationship while treating the victims of the bus crash. Meanwhile, Elijah regrets not helping his friend Danny during the troublesome times.
Meanwhile, Nurse Gabriel informs Danny about Dr. Cruz's daughter being one of the victims of the fatal bus crash. Even though Elijah wanted to inform Cruz about her daughter, Danny ordered him not to because Cruz was in the middle of a surgery. Meanwhile, Dr. Sophie Chan and Camilia don't seem to get along, as Chan bullies her for wearing makeup and dressing up.
Chan, a surgical intern, seems bonkers for Cole's approval as she finally operates on a patient successfully, but Chan does not appreciate her and she rushes out of the room.
Danny's leadership tested amid Hurricane: Pulse Episode 1
Danny narrates a fake story about Harper's paralysis to convince the bus driver, Chris Harris, who requires immediate surgery. Meanwhile, the nurse informs Danny about an incoming critically injured patient. On her way out, Danny finds Xander and asks for his help to identify Vero Cruz. As Vero's body arrives, Xander, Danny, and the team rush to the Trauma Bay. Danny instructs Camilia to inform Dr. Cruz about Vero's condition.
As Vero's condition worsens, Danny performs a pericardial drain even though Xander disagrees with it.. The power shuts down, making the procedure even riskier, as the ultrasound shuts down, but Danny performs the procedure successfully. Meanwhile, a confused Camilia asks Elijah to inform Dr. Cruz about her daughter's condition. Dr. Cruz grows furious when Elijah informs her about her daughter, Vero.
Dr. Cruz confronts Danny for not letting her know about Vero's condition. However, Danny defends herself, saying that it was not fair to the patient whom Cruz was operating on, and as a chief resident, it was her call. Danny apologizes to Cruz for crossing the line in the argument. The coach and Danny share an emotional moment when the students cheer Chris for the surgery. Meanwhile, Cole goes to Tyler to inform him that his hand is fixed, and he thanks paramedic Nia for her assistance.
In Danny's flashback memories, Xander congratulates her for successfully operating a pregnancy case. When Xander initiates a kiss, Danny pushes him back, which increases the tension between them.
Coming back to the present time, Danny told Xander that she knew about the mysterious reason behind his transfer from Kennedy Hospital. Meanwhile, Dr. Cruz asks Xander to provide his services to the Maguire Medical Centre as they are short-staffed, and Hurricane Abby has caused a sudden surge of incoming patients.
