Shark Tank's Jane Lu invited fellow Shark Robert Herjavec on her The Lazy CEO podcast episode, which aired on November 5, 2024. While on the podcast, Robert shared his journey as an immigrant, how he got into tech, and Shark Tank.
On the other hand, Jane Lu also shared her thoughts on "corporate jobs" and "financial security." The female Shark also recalled quitting her job and starting her business.
"So for me, the moment that things changed was I always looked at the corporate job as the way to not be poor, to not be poor and for financial security. But then there was a moment when I think it was such a cliche, but when I traveled that I realized I looked at the financial security as a prison sentence."
She added:
"I'm like, Oh my God, 40 years of hard time in the county. That sounds terrible. I don't want that. I don't want 40 years of 50 years of doing something I hate. How is that the point of life? So was there a point that, you know, it kind of changed for you?"
Shark Tank's Jane Lu and Robert Herjavec discuss financial security, corporate job, failing in school, and more
During his appearance on Jane Lu's November 5, 2024 podcast episode, Robert Herjavec told her she was a "lot smarter" than him because she became an accountant. He then recalled wanting to become a lawyer, but he failed.
However, after his Godfather suggested he take Maths, which again, Robert failed. So, he decided to drop out of the university:
"I'm the only person in my entire mom and dad side that ever went further than high school."
After his father learned about it, he didn't accept that decision and told him to continue his studies. Hence, that was how he went back to school.
Shark Tank mentor also recalled not getting a job initially. Then, he somehow fell into a "computer job."
"And then one day I got fired, didn't have enough money to make my mortgage payment and just started selling computer stuff. And I sold one thing, still had the job. I was like, oh, that was really good. I sold another thing. And then I made more money working at night in three months than my annual salary," said Robert.
Listening to Robert recalling his school days and getting into the tech, Jane Lu also shared when "things changed" for her. She stated that, she had this mindset where she thought having a corporate job was "the way to not be poor."
Later, the female Shark realized that what she thought of "financial security" was a "prison sentence." Thinking about how she didn't want to do something she "hated" for 40 to 50 years, things changed for her.
Further, on the podcast, she talked about how she started her company and how it didn't work out initially.
